Currently when driving this segment the directions are “Exit to the right for 2nd Ave SW”
No road signage though makes any mention of 2nd Ave SW. There are 2 road signs very close together though.
The very last road sign says: South Park via Holden St
Just a few feet in front of that though is a more prominent sign that says: To SR-99 S / W Marginal Way / Highland Park Way
What do people think this segment should be updated to?
From StreetView, I see that the “South Park via” sign is at the gore point, probably too far along for a driver to make a decision based on it. I’d go with “to SR-99 S / W Marginal Way / Highland Park Way”.
A third option is to leave it blank. Using the live map for directions, it merely says “Keep right,” although I might expect it to say “Stay to the right, on 2nd Ave SW”, taking the name of the next street. I’m still not clear on how this works.
Also, I see this segment is mis-named “to 2nd Ave SW”, which might work if you’re heading southeast, but is completely wrong if you’re headed northwest. I’ve renamed it to “W Marginal Way SW”.
Yes, it does. As I mentioned above though, there is no road signage anywhere along this exit path that mentions 2nd Ave. Additionally both left and right exits lead to 2nd ave, so that is a confusion prompt for a driver unfamiliar with the area.
Having a prompt that says “stay to the right at 2nd ave sw” here causes cognitive dissonance as the driver now starts looking for a sign that does not exist.
Because the name of the ramp is empty, then Waze will do that. Conversely, if you name the ramp, Waze is still going to tell someone to “turn onto 2nd Ave SW.” There’s no way around it, except to rename 2nd Ave SW, and that’s wrong, because the street name is correct.
Notice that ramp splits into 2. Waze uses the “Street” field to give the “keep to the right at I-5 S / Portland / W Seattle Bridge” That is a particularly gnarly example as that ramp splits several times. At each of those splits, Waze properly speak prompts what’s in the ‘Street’ field.
Waze will use the “Street” field for a segment, and only defaults to going for the “end road” when no Street entry exists.
So naming the segment in question here, Waze would give a more helpful queue to the driver that matches the road signage.
In this scenario, the driver probably would not even get a prompt about 2nd Ave SW, as the ramp meeting angle is so small onto the street again. The first prompt they get should then be for their next actual turn/naviagation prompt. (like this one here: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=4&lat=47.59081&lon=-122.29614&layers=TBFTFFTTTTFTTFTFTFTFTTTTT&env=usa&segments=54511546 the Street name is used to navigate onto the ramp, and there’s no subsequent voice prompt of having to turn onto Rainier as the ramp angle is slight enough)
At the split off the ramp, I’ve changed this segment to read “to SR-99 S / W Marginal Way” to match the signage. I left off “Highland Park Way” and “South Seattle Community College” for brevity. Waze will take WAY too long to say all that. And as it is now, it should be quite clear.
