I’d like to get opinions on this. I’ve read the wiki for Road Naming Guidelines numerous times, and it just doesn’t match the situation here 100%. I may be making it more difficult than it needs to be, though…
State Route 5 passes through Douglasville. It does have a local name, which is Bill Arp Road. The signage on the road says Bill Arp Road. At some major intersections, the road signs do also have SR 5 on them. The road in Waze is currently named Bill Arp Road.
The questions occur when you factor in local convention and street addressing…I grew up here, and I’ve never heard anyone ever refer to this road as Bill Arp Road. It’s “Hwy 5”. So, according to the wiki, it should probably be named Bill Arp Road because that’s what all the signs say. But you’re not ever going to find an official street address with Bill Arp Road on it. All the addresses (according to both the local tax digest and actual use) are Hwy 5.
As an example, when I search for a certain local grocery store in Live Map: 3251 Hwy 5, Douglasville, GA, (the actual address) it tells me the search was not helpful. 3251 SR-5, Douglasville, GA: search was not helpful. If I search 3251 Bill Arp Road, it finds it perfectly. If I search 3251 GA-5, Douglasville, it also finds the store…and neither of those are the actual address.
I feel that the road should not use the local name. But the State Rte / SR naming convention won’t match the actual physical street addresses either.
Thoughts?
