GA state road naming convention?

I was recently driving through Georgia and found around Atlanta, the Waze naming convention for most Georgia state roads has been state rte (i.e. state rte 400). However, that is not how it is shown on the signs or referred to in the vernacular. Whenever people refer to most state roads they say Georgia 400 or when written GA-400.

Especially since I used to live in Georgia, I had a hard time with seeing it as state rte 400 in Waze.

My question is this. Should I leave it that way or change it to the way people are used to seeing it as GA-400?

  1. Use the naming convention in the wiki
  2. search the wiki for any george specific conventions
  3. check under the language forums for any Georgia forums/threads

The naming convention is the way it is in order to produce the shield. There are other states, like Louisiana, for which the ss-### (were ss is the two letter state abbreviations) format is preferred. Sketch, who is around the forums, may also have something to add, being from Louisiana, and he likes to test out different things.

We have been discussing the same thing here in NC. We decided, FrisbeeDog can correct me if I am wrong, that we are leaving it as State Hwy XX for now for the shields but we would prefer it to be NC-XX as well. Hopefully support can come up with some sort of field to allow us us to set shield and shield text data in the near future.

Until recently, it was named “Turner McDonald Parkway” instead of State Rte 400. Nobody knows it by that name at all, so at least State Rt 400 makes a little sense.

Slowly but surely the Atlanta area is getting better in Waze.

Most of the road signs are “State Route xxx” or “SR xxx”, so I’ve been going with SR-xxx (which is correctly pronounced by the TTS as “State Route xxx”)

The only problem with that is that (at least at the moment) you don’t get shields for “SR-xx” … but yes, it still looks okay on the screen even without the shields, and it sounds good in the TTS. I’ve been doing that around my area for a little while now, and it does help keep the display less cluttered when the next turn is onto such a road.

<OFFTOPIC> Been a long time since I’ve been down your way … got some family down in Athens that I haven’t seen in several years. Was hoping to get down that way this summer, but I couldn’t get the vacation time when I needed it to be. :frowning: </OFFTOPIC>

Except for a few segments here and there, shields never got generated automatically for “State Hwy xxx” for me :?
