“Gropp Ave” is read as “Grant Ave”. Gropp rhymes with crop.

CH-EA in Kenosha county, WI is being pronounced as “County Highway ee-yah.” It should be the two letters spoken separately.
That’s surprising since it is such a great discrepancy. Have you heard it yourself on multiple tries?
It’s a little tough to hear, but it does say Gropp. Unfortunately the forum won’t allow mp3 attachments.

Reporting that the road name should be pronounced “wheel-e” rather than “wheel”
UR for Triage’s post above
it should be “wee - lee” not wheel - e.
You post to Dropbox / Google Drive / … And post a share link here. It what we’ve done above.

Here’s an instruction with Gropp Ave:
Hi everyone,
I tried searching this thread before posting but it’s so huge I couldn’t find my answer.
I am seeing two differences between the old Samantha abbreviations page and the newer Jane abbreviations page:
Circle: Cir (Samantha) -omitted- (Jane)
Crossing: Xing (Samantha) X-ing (Jane)
So my questions are, should I remove “Cir” as an abbreviation and replace with Circle? And should I change Xing to X-ing?
Thanks!
Tom
According to this UR, “SR286” (no punctuation) is being pronounced as “Senior 286”. This is a misformatting of the road name, which I’ve fixed, but it is the type of error that might pop up multiple places.
Three TTS issues on this road ( https://goo.gl/Df52vu):
(1) Abbreviation “Ft” should be pronounced “fort” - Jane is currently pronouncing as “fourth”
(2) Pronunciation of “Howard” sounds be “How-urd” - Jane is currently pronouncing as something that sounds like “Ourd”
(3) The town name, “De Pere” should be pronounced “Duh Peer” (http://goo.gl/W8JvgW) - Jane is currently pronouncing as “Duh Purr”
Multiple URs and I’ve heard this myself.
“Live Oak” being pronounced as if one were to “Live Free” rather than as “The Who Live at Leeds”
Frikkin’ English!
What is the status of Br and Brg?
The big table says “Br” TTSd to “Branch” as of early 2012, while “Brg” TTSd to “Bridge” as of mid-2014. But the table mentions that these TTS tests were conducted prior to “Jane”. Meanwhile the latest USA guidance does not mention “Brg”, and Validator flags “Brg” as unknown.
If “Brg” has been completely discontinued in the last year and no longer functions at all in TTS, may I recommend that it nevertheless be added to the new USA Abbreviations and Acronyms wiki article as “(discontinued, do not use)”?
It is always helpful, when formerly recommended guidance is withdrawn, that there be some mention of whether it’s deprecated or no longer supported at all :ugeek:
Becher St in Milwaukee is currently pronounced as if it rhymed with Decker. The correct pronunciation for us is a long EE sound. BEETcher St.
Although there is no real answer as to why we pronounce it this way, that is the local pronunciation of it.
In parts of Wyoming, east-west country roads are named “County Lane XXX” and north-south roads are “County Road XXX”. See here for example.
I would like to propose adding the abbreviation CL-XXX to read as “County Lane XXX” similar to how CR-XXX reads as “County Road XXX”.
For now, editors are instructed to keep the current format as “Co Ln XXX”.
Cheers,
Br was built into Samantha as Branch. As soon as Jane took over it was switched to Bridge immediately.
The new recommendation from that point forward is to use Br for bridge (matching the BGS where it is abbreviated). To avoid instantly breaking all the places on the map which already had Brg in place, Brg was left still functioning, just is no longer recommended.
The only MUTCD approved abbreviation for Bridge is Br as well. The only time going forward you should use Brg is whn the BGS explicitly says Brg (though I haven’t seen one of those myself yet).

Cir was omitted accidentally, I have now replaced it in the wiki list for Jane. Cir does work and is recommended for Circle.
X-ing is the recommended version for crossing, feel free to change it when you see it. You don’t have to go running searching for them all, as Xing still does work for backwards compatibility. Though when you see it, it would be nice to switch to the recommended X-ing.

I will bring this to the team and see what they say.

Jane voiced “Trl” as “tee-arr-ell” for me here this morning.
