Note that the restrictions also includes the opportunity to add restrictions based on vehicle type. Any thoughts on this? In the centre of Newport, on the Isle of Wight, there is a bus/taxi lane in the opposite direction to the main traffic flow. I’ve lifted the previous no entry restriction today to mark the junctions as restricted at all times, except for ‘public transport’, ‘buses’ and ‘taxis’. Here’s a link: https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-1.29444&lat=50.69882&zoom=7&layers=TBFTFFTTTTTTTFTTTTTTTTTTT&env=row - the roads are St James Street and South Street going south and then east.

PS I’ll add the time restriction to the chain ferry in Cowes. That’s an application of the new function I hadn’t thought of.
If waze plans on implementing type restrictions (as is implied by the new system) then as a UK community we need to begin to decide what a ‘truck’ is and what restrictions should be marked as such. The wiki example of a ‘truck only intersection’ in the states doesn’t apply here, but we do have 3.5T, 7.5T and roads for which there is no through access for lorries.
To be honest, I think Waze are going in the wrong direction (sorry about the pun) with this one.
The Waze map is not perfect for cars, but cars can turn around when they encounter a problem, and we have a community of car-using editors busily improving the map.
The driver of a large lorry could not risk using Waze until the map for his vehicle type is pretty well perfect. It’s not easy to turn a lorry when you find the road’s too narrow or the bridge is too low. And I don’t think our car editor community is even going to notice the problems which a lorry would encounter, never mind fix the map for them.
So I don’t think Waze is ever going to be used by drivers of anything large enough for the “truck” restrictions to apply.
If you manage a fleet of “trucks” you still have to buy professional route planning software and do the job properly - consumer satnavs are nowhere near good enough and won’t be for years if ever. So I think we should discount Waze users using trucks (or truck drivers using Waze). Sure they will use it but they will not expect it to take into account restrictions for their vehicle weight.
More of an issue are the roads with 2T weight limits (I know of two) - I used to have a car over this weight and I suspect many of those “two-tonne mummy trucks” are in fact as well as name over 2T.
I think if Waze is going to go this way, we would need to be able to input actual weight and height restrictions for roads, turns etc. Then the user would need to be able to input the weight and height of his/her vehicle.
Personally, I think this would be a waste of time, for the reasons that winelight elucidates above. If we are going to capture further data for roads, I’d much rather put my effort into capturing speed limits, and have them displayed on the phone, with an optional alert when my actual speed exceeds the limit.
Speed limits would improve the usefulness of Waze for many more people than height/weight limits.
I see a quite a lot of URs in this area where the most likely explanation is a 3.5T or 7.5T weight limit or 6-6 or 7 foot width restriction. Still, that is most of the Chelsea tractors …
So the other thing I been wondering, going back to one of my first posts on this thread, time restricted tolls. Not sure if waze has that planned or not.
But we could easily implement with the exisiting tools - although it would be a lot of work.
Would require two roads, one marked as toll with restrictions only allowing travel during the time of the toll, and the other, non toll road allowing travel at all other times, I think this would be good apart from the amount of work except I could also foresee a few problems if you run early or late you could hit a toll you would otherwise have wanted to avoid, and would not have been told you are hitting a toll.
Any thoughts on this? Dartford tunnel and congestion charge zone are things that apply here, sure there are others too.
Yes, London Congestion Charging Zone is probably the biggest headache to implementing something like that. I don’t know whether Iain ever counted the number of entry points he created by dualling each street with the inward set to toll, and the outward not, but it must have been quite a lot.
Trouble is, now we can do it, we’re almost forced to do so. There’s a lot of work there now and I’d defer to Iain on how (and if) we should do this.
We’re not so much discussing it - as they’re waiting for me to do it!
Actually, I need to do some tests first. The main question is: if you reach a split in the road and only one leg is unrestricted at any particular time, will you get a “keep left/right”. If the answer is “yes”, entry in to the CCZ is going to include some strange instructions.
Also, note that I will have to put 3 segments in at every 2-way entry/exit - because you need a parallel non-toll segment leading out of the CCZ.
Once the test results are in, I’ll be going round the CCZ again. Maybe I’ll count the entries this time.
Well seeing as they are locked at l5 can you not have segments on top of each other. Would look better on the app. Other wise 6 motorway segments at Dartford for example might look a bit weird. also what happens if you have avoid tolls on but don’t reach the non toll segment in time?
The CCZ tolls actually involve 2 very small parallel segments. I did careful testing to make sure they were completely invisible in the app. at highest zoom.
Good question - without a good answer yet. It’s possible that the app may simply recalculate based on your ETA, or it may take some other event (like stopping at lights, or turning off the route). I plan to do some testing by routing to the far side of the Woolwich ferry whilst I still have time to make it, and then just sitting in my office until I run out of time. I may also try routing there whilst I barely have time to make it and then driving that way very slowly.
I would try routing there before it’s open and see what happens but I’m never up that early in the morning. Are you?
Sorry yes, I realise that, I thought the same, and did read that before.
But I’m thinking on a more larger scale, for woolwich ferry its not too bad a diversion.
I have avoid tolls off on mine as living next to the dartford tunnel I have no choice, but lets say you have it on, it is routing you round the M25 across the crossing, but then the restrictions change, the route changes, now that is one hell of a re-route, with no reason why displayed in the app. when you initially set the route you can choose, but you would get no warning why.
The same could potentially apply for the CCZ, where as you might not mind going through the toll if you were asked.
this is why I thought I would ask, it could cause some really bizare routing, imagine being taken right to the edge of the CCZ, only to be turned around and taken right round london although I assume if you are going into london, it wouldnt matter as you have no choice).
EDIT: Sometimes I miss having the IRC where we could discuss things like this in a live environment.
