All, I am beginning the process of upgrading roads in TN so they comply with with the new Waze road type guidelines and the TN FC maps. So far, I have completed these upgrades in Shelby (Memphis) and Davidson (Nashville) counties. My next goal is to complete this process for the Nashville metropolitan area (Cheatham, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner, and Robertson counties).
Please be aware that these upgrades are occurring and that there may be some temporary road type inconsistencies near county lines, as I am working on a county by county basis. If you wish to help out, please let me know so that we can work together. Also, if you have any questions about my interpretation of the FC maps and the applied road type, please reply here or send me a PM.
Thanks.
Here is an update to the TN functional classification upgrades:
I have sporadically been active in updating the FC across the state. I have completed these upgrades for all roads classified as “Primary Street” or higher in the following areas:
ALL counties ALONG and EAST of I-65
Memphis metro area: Shelby County
Jackson area: Madison County
Clarksville area: Montgomery County
Nashville metro area: Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner, Robertson, Cheatham, Hickman, Maury Counties
I am continuing to move westward from the I-65 corridor and hope to eventually finish… If you have any questions about what I have completed or the specific road type translation I am using from TN FC maps, please ask!
Fayette and Hardeman counties are done.
Paul,
I’d be happy to help. I’ve just started editing around the Winchester, McMinnville/Warren County areas. Should soon be a L3 editor and am a fellow engineer. Let me know what you would like me to do or focus on.
I have already completed all of the counties east of I-65 as far as function classification is concerned. General editing is still very much needed in these areas, as I didn’t work on details of these areas. I only worked to properly classify all the primary streets and above, so please don’t reclassify those roads.
Thanks for your help!
I found a few urban collectors you missed or partially missed in Mcminnville. I did make some changes earlier in Winchester that I’ve returned to what they were. Sorry about that. I will work on general editing in the area.
I noticed that you’ve made TN-127 from Winchester to Coffee Cnty (perhaps beyond) a mH versus PS. The TN FC shows it as a rural major collector, which should be a PS?
Edit: Same question for Six Mile Board Rd (TN-121), Lynchburg Hwy (TN-50), Old Tullahoma (TN-130) and Mansford Rd (TN-476).
By default, all state highways are mH, unless a FC map shows them as Major/Primary Arterial or Freeway.
That is what is confusing to me and why I made changes in Winchester, TN (which I’ve now backed out). Following that logic, Cowan Hwy/South College St/US-41 Alt would continue to be a MH once it crosses into Winchester since it is a US Hwy and not be downgraded to a mH, correct?
That is correct. US business routes will default to a mH, but otherwise a US highway is always a MH or above.
