Tobin Bridge (US 1S) Electronic Tolls

Ok, let me brief you on what is going on for the Tobin Bridge. Very soon, they will be doing a complete overhaul of the toll from a man-handled toll collection and electronic toll collection (using transponders) to an all electronic toll collection (using transponders) and camera license plate readers for vehicles with no transponder.

Now to why I decided to post this. Thinking of the fact that the tolls will use cameras to capture images of license plates, should this also be considered as speed cams. Remember, these Electronic Tolls and Cameras are planned to be the tolling system throughout the state, such as the Mass Pike.

I think it should just remain a toll road. Waze gives the option to route around toll roads, not speed cams.

The purpose of speed cameras in Waze is to warn people that they might get a ticket for speeding, not that they might get their picture taken. Therefore, the only reason to add speed cameras to the map would be if they are actually issuing tickets if you go through the toll too fast. That doesn’t seem to be in the plans right now so we should not add cameras until they start issuing tickets.

i do not agree that the cameras are for speed detection.

as a matter of fact, it looks like they are installing high speed cameras and will increase “toll booth” speed.

I was just curious as to how this will be. Personally, I don’t see the need to put speed cams at this time. At the same time, the place where the toll will be is a popular place for state troopers to be placed for speed traps so with that, I can definitely see that the cams could theoretically be used as a way to track speed and issue tickets. Since it is still in it’s testing stage, we will just have to see when all is said and done.

Then drivers should report a police speed trap, not have a permanent speed camera set up. They have flyover tolling like this in NH on I-93, but there’s no speed cameras set up, the roads are just set as toll roads.
