Traffic Cameras in MA

I am seeing traffic camera’s popping up in residential area’s on my driving routes. As far as I know there are no traffic camera’s of any kind permitted in MA outside of monitoring toll violations on the Mass Pike.

Can someone confirm that with the exception of toll booths all other traffic cams on the map in MA were mistakenly added and should be deleted when encountered?

That seems to be correct:

Are these cameras how Google gets its traffic data? Is there any link between Waze and Google for this yet?

Yes, we’ve been working off the position that speed/red light cameras are not legal in MA. This is the standard PM I send users who report a lot of cameras in one place (like 10 down one street, or 20 in a town):

Apart from users who report a high number of cameras, should we just delete the one offs that we see as we encounter them?

Yes, delete them.

I know this is an old thread but people seem to be adding speed cameras on the map and I wonder if the position on speed cameras has changed since 2013. my research I can find no town in my area that has publicly admitted having one.

thanks!

Nothing has changed. Speed cameras are not permitted in MA.

If you see them, delete them.

Thanks! btw I found this handy link which seems to get updated routinely

http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/auto_enforce.html Not sure how legal the info is but it is useful.

I know it’s late to the party, but unapproved cameras will appear in the editor for about three weeks, and then are automatically discarded by the system.

Therefore it is not necessary to spend time removing unapproved cameras from the map.

Also, the user reporting the cameras does not get any points until they are approved by an editor.
