Okay, I can’t select the entire street and request because it says that they’re in opposite directions or something like that. I just want to rename them to make things a bit more clear. A500 > Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The current Streetview imagery here suggests the destination shown on the road signs is listed simply as “Newcastle”, and as such this would be the preferred form of the corresponding instruction given to users.
It’s also worth bearing in mind the relatively limited amount of space in the app used to display such instructions in text form, and how long it might take to read out the complete instruction in spoken form - we don’t want to give users confusing instructions by overly-abbreviating road or place names, however at the same time we need to avoid overloading them with instructions that may well be impossible to take in whilst driving, especially if (as in cases like this) there’s a good chance their app will have only just finished giving them the previous instruction, thus only giving them perhaps one chance to take in this one before they get to the point of having to decide what it means with respect to the road ahead.
But if someone exits at the A34, it will say Newcastle-under-Lyme. It just makes things consistent.
That’s because, once you get onto the A500, the road signage there does now list the destination as “Newcastle-under-Lyme”, so the Waze instructions given there remain consistent with the real world signage, even if it isn’t consistent with any other instructions we might just have given. And being consistent with the real world signage, no matter how inconsistent THAT might be, is desirable because it means a user has to do less mental processing to match up the instruction they’ve just seen/heard from their app, with what they see in front of them.
