Update Request - Level 5 - Moline, IL

Exiting off the highway and turning left causes TTS to say “stay to the left” and then “turn left” with these two ramp segments. Can someone update so that TTS just says one or the other?

Thanks

You get the “keep left” because of the split in the ramp. Then you get a “turn left” because of the Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI). I went thru the Wiki here : http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best_map_editing_practice?title=Limited_Access_Interchange_Style_Guide#Single_Point_Urban_Interchange_.28SPUI.29 just to make sure I didn’t miss something and screw it up. That’s just the way it is going to work.

I was having a conversation with a editor near me earlier today about this very type of situation – a stay left followed by a turn left. I’ve implemented a change at a certain interchange to test a theory on a way of removing the first stay left. I’m almost certain it will work, but we need to test it first.

Great, let me know what you get.

Okay, so I was getting mixed results with the livemap, like some edits went live one day and others went live the next.

This is what I am TRYING to do. I’ll have to do some more testing…

Junction is just a standard Interstate exit ramp ending in a Y split – left branch of Y to turn left, right branch to turn right.

Method one:

  • Base of Y leading to split has same name as the left branch of Y (in this case name of exit ramp)
  • Right branch of Y has a name different from the base and other branch (in this case unnamed)
  • Angle between base of Y and left branch close to 180
  • Angle between base of Y and right branch in the 20 to 30 degree range

EXPECTED Results:

  • Going left:
    1.) Exit at exit name.
2.) Turn left at main street name. (given at the main street)
  • Going right:
    1.) Exit at exit name.
2.) Stay to the right at main street name. (at split, no instruction where right branch of Y merges into the main street)

I also have a Method 2 I waiting to test, where the right branch goes off at a 90 degree angle which should give a “turn” instruction. Then I want to test variations of naming of the ramps in that case.

Just an update if anyone is eagerly awaiting results

For the right turn off that exit, I only get a stay to the right. Maybe that’s because the angle on the connector to 7th Ave is less and it doesn’t classify it as a turn like going left?

Correct. We can modify the behavior of the navigation instructions at both the start and end of those branches of the Y.

Depending on how long the branches of the Y are and how the lanes a striped, each situation may call for a different set of names/angles to get what make sense there on the ground. In some cases we may want/need the split for the Y to give instructions no matter which direction you are going.

So that’s all I’m asking, is for the angle to be modified, then I can mark this request as solved.

A few days ago, I modified the left from the off ramp from I-74 W, now TTS says to keep left and dropped the turn left. I did the east side today, so it will be a few days before that one works the same.
