We may have found a new friend in the search for traffic information, and their name is AI

Yes, and then you can use it to get confirmation on, for example, reconstructions, new layouts, etc. Not always, but often when you see conflicting info, for instance, I’ve managed to get it to sometimes just confirm that construction has taken place in the area, but often also what has changed, along with links to sources; I use it quite a bit.

I use Gemini as well; I think it’s the best when it comes to being able to detect if it’s talking nonsense / speculating. Then I also think a bit about copyright; Google should hardly be able to have any objections to someone using a Google product to improve another Google product, or am I thinking wrong?

I’ve previously switched between different AI services. If the AI service I’m using doesn’t find the information I’m looking for, another service often succeeds in finding it. I usually use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

It’s possible that Google has softened its stance on IPR/copyright, but at least previously, we weren’t allowed to retrieve information from Google Maps, such as street names or locations. There is an older example where Waze was forced to delete an entire map in a Latin American country because certain information had been copied from an unauthorized source. There were errors in the map they had copied from, and those errors ended up on Waze’s map, so it was obvious that copying had taken place.

Oh, was that after or before Google bought them out? Of course, I saw the thread about those, so I looked that up as well; I just found it a bit funny that they shouldn’t really care at all :slightly_smiling_face: Gemini’s results are allowed to be used commercially too, as long as you aren’t like using a pro account from a company (different rules apply then), I don’t know how it is with the others.

The removal of the land map was quite a long time ago, long before Google acquired Waze. But the question has come up a number of times since the acquisition and the answer has been the same, which may seem a little strange…

Hey, aren’t we straying a bit from the thread’s title, namely gathering traffic information? I don’t see how copyright would apply here?

If the AI engine you’re using has any limitations, that would be relevant, but true, I digressed a bit with tips that it can also be used to get information about rebuilding, for example :slightly_smiling_face::+1:

Traffic information is often linked to new construction and renovations.

What definitely triggers copyright, however, is copying map information directly from another commercial map service. I haven’t seen Gemini do that even once, for example.

Besides, it’s completely unreasonable for those of us using AI services to have to keep track of whether the response is protected in some way. The people building the services have to ensure that. A news aggregator like Omni wouldn’t be able to exist otherwise.

But if you read the ToS, that’s what it does; it’s trained on data that may be copyrighted and shifts the responsibility onto you. It’s definitely interesting from a legal standpoint — there have been many long discussions about those parts at work. It’s certainly confusing, and you can conclude that legislation is clearly lagging behind, and some things AI does are definitely questionable when it comes to those aspects.

But I agree, it should normally be fine, even though sometimes when I’ve prompted for sources, it has actually found the info and linked to local newspapers behind paywalls when I’ve prompted about certain renovations.

Interesting, what can you trust in these times?
