Walking Route Option

I don’t know if I missed a thread about this, but searched and didn’t find anything. When I’m in a town I’m not familiar with and walking around I use the mapping system on my iphone which i HATE. LOVING WAZE though for driving…would be nice to chose a “walking” route like the iphone map system does.

Waze has the potential to be used for other modes of transportation but as it stands, if used for biking or walking, it will only mess of the traffic data for drivers. Driving is where Waze should be used and no other mode of transportation.

Thanks didn’t think of that…just would be a nice “add on” in the future

It sure would be! And, it has a good amount of support on the Client Uservoice feature requests.

Although just wait until the complaints come in about the phone heating up and the battery draining too quickly. Much harder to charge when you don’t have an accessory port built into your leg

And then we are going to run into issues such as:

  • Need more report items - crack in sidewalk, skateboarder hazard, sidewalk closed, dangerous area, etc.
  • Vehicle reports being hidden when in pedestrian mode
  • Pedestrian reports being hidden when in vehicle mode
  • 10 more modes that just ‘must’ be added - motorcycle, train, ferry, etc. etc. etc.
  • Traffic reporting being suppressed
  • Proper ETA calculation
  • Off network pedestrian mode
  • ensuring that non-routable types (eg walking paths) can’t be routed on by vehicles
  • etc. etc. etc. etc.

Can’t we just be happy with an application that does the best job of getting us to our destination via the fastest route? Make Waze the best at that? The feature requests never end…

What you don’t have one of those yet? Luddite. :stuck_out_tongue:

My question would be how much do walking routes change and how often do you experience traffic while walking?

There are a lot of mapping apps out there for hiking, cycling etc. Best to use a tool that is intended for that use rather than change a driving aid such as Waze. I highly recommend MotionX-GPS which is what I use when cycling.

OMG, someone finally got it! Yea!!!

But! But … but I won’t get my POINTZ!

1,000,000% disagree:
Obviously, if one was in “Walk ,” “Run”, or “Bike” Mode the system would be smart enough as to NOT affect traffic data. Waze should be use for ALL modes.

If you look around you will see many 2-6 miles/hr going on in many back neighborhoods. Can you guess what everyone is doing – that’s correct “Walking” with Waze turned on.

That speed would indicate a healthy traffic flow - in parts of London. If you love Waze in your car, do not pollute it with other data. Use RunTracker or whatever you’ve got.

[edit]
I just visited the RunTracker and BikeTracker-forums. There are 0 (zero, nil) requests for a car-mode in those forums. Why does everybody expect it to be the other way around in Waze?

Sorry, but I still disagree. My point is that you can’t expect people not to walk, bike, and run with Waze. So that being said (and agreed to that it happens a lot), create a feature that will take that into consideration (the new mode would not pollute the rest of the “Car mode” data). A mode for each solves everything.

I just made it into this weeks top-3 in RunTracker! Nobody runs as fast as I do! (120kmh)

You medaled. Is that you?

Just think of the number of points for that.

The facts are:

  • there currently is no mode in Waze for walking, biking, etc.
  • if you use Waze for these modes of transportation it will pollute the traffic data for those of use that are using Waze for its intended purpose

If you are here reading this you now understand. Yes, other people who don’t know may try to use Waze for walking (it isn’t going to work well anyway since Waze is not aware of walking paths, won’t route you against a one way street, eta not correct, etc).

If Waze adds other modes then go for it.

Gettingthere – agreed these are the facts for why we need the other modes (so not to pollute the database) and unfortunately there is no way this/people can be controlled. Maybe an “Ignore Mode” to start until something more elaborate can be developed.

Just because people are using it for walking doesn’t mean that Waze should add that as an option. A lot of these walkers will just have Waze switched on in their pocket by accident so what makes you think that people will remember to switch modes? Waze will record people driving at 2 mph and walking at 60mph.

It’s a non-starter anyway as Waze will never add this functionality. It will add no benefit to the map and therefore no revenue for them.

Having an all inclusive nav app is a good thing, for no one wants the hassle of learning and keeping multiple nav apps current. If not, others will. It would be a strategic move for Waze and gain market share.

I agree that if people forget to turn off Waze when they get out of their cars and start walking, they are not going to remember to switch it to “walking” mode. But there are ways to determine automatically that a person is walking and not driving. Some signs can be detected when post-processing the GPS track, to protect road data; others (e.g., monitoring an internal accelerometer) might be useful in real-time to prevent traffic reports.

Yes it’s easy to automatically determine that someone isn’t walking at 50mph, but it’s not impossible for a car to crawl in traffic at 2mph. So how could this be determined automatically?

IMO it’s unnecessary work for Waze to develop this kind of functionality when they will never do it to the same standard as a dedicated walking app of which there are many, and it would risk damaging the main function of Waze.

Do people take their TomTom unit on a walk with them and expect it to work as well?
