Hi All, I saw this article in the BBC about AI cameras that are used to catch drivers who are using their phone while driving. Waze shows speed camera and traffic light cameras. Do you know if AI cameras are also shown on Waze?
Until such cameras become mainstream, it’s unlikely Waze will support them. There are many other types of cameras that are in use that don’t have a dedicated category or alert, so at present only speed cameras and red light cameras are supported and used on the map.
One could argue that warnings for speed cameras might possibly be considered a safety function - speed cameras are (supposedly) placed at accident black-spots, so a warning for a camera is a warning of a location which is potentially dangerous. However, AI cameras to catch those who are using their phones while driving should, IMHO, not be subject to a warning - if you’re stupid enough to be using a hand-held phone at the wheel, you deserve everything you get.
Thanks Gareth. I use Waze when driving and my mobile phone is in a caddy/holder. I do not use my phone when driving. I did wonder if the AI cameras would be included in Waze.
For clarity - the comment wasn’t aimed at you. It was an observation on those who use handheld phones while driving and are therefore at risk of being prosecuted (rightly so) as a result of these cameras. Sorry if it sounded personal!
There’s already several suggestions for this on Waze Suggestion Box, you can add your vote.
Also remember Waze is used globally so any new features need to relevant in many countries before the devs will consider it.
I agree. Althought, it would be great, if Waze could introduced more “camera types” into WME. However, these types of “cameras” should NOT be introduced/mapped. By giving the Waze user warning of such “camera” ahead, would be very stupid. If you being reckless by using a mobile device etc at the steering wheel of a moving vehicle, you deserve IMHO to be caught and fined.
