To be honest, I was thinking I’d be the first one in Adelaide - wasn’t I in for a surprise! Not only had a few roads in my area been mapped, but Anzac Highway - the main road from the city to the beach, near where I live - was perfectly set, both lanes defined and everything! But, not to be slack, I have been running Waze every time I go somewhere - albeit cheating a little due to using busses. I say it counts, they still use the roads.
BUT… after having such a blast watching the little guy chomping away at the dots, and steamrollering my way on some new roads, I got home to perfect my efforts, and… nothing. Trying to get cartouche to behave itself is a lesson in patience! It seems to run OK for a little while in Google Chrome, which is more than I can say for Firefox and Safari, and lots more than IE8. But, after updating the roads I had travelled, it now won’t load anything - no roads, no aerial shots, nothing but a blank Australia. Somewhat soul crushing, really, as I was hoping I’d be able to get my area mapped out and looking sexy and shiny and stuff. Ah well, with luck an area manager will appear soon and polish it all up. I’d nominate myself, if only I knew how to make it work.
All the same, I can’t wait till this catches on hard, and I will continue to hope for a miracle and have cartouche work quickly and elegantly on my computer. One can hope!
I use it all the time. It takes about 24 hours or so for the roads to update, and sometimes it needs to be run over twice or three times by other commuters.
I’d really love for everyone to get mapping, I’ve seen new lines appear every day, I’m mapping the southern end slowly, the city is nicely done…
What we need now is for everyone to run it all the time, not just to map it…Once we get a few people using it, slowly others will see how useful this app will be.
Yeah, the city is certainly coming along, I know - I mapped most of it out in Cartouche! Amazing how much easier it becomes with practice!
SO. I bit the bullet and became an area manager - and at the moment, I’m focusing on correcting the main roads. So many have been slapped quickly down by users and are an absolute mess! So hopefully i can straighten out a few kinks and get the main roads connected properly. So far, I’ve got the crafers highway, through to MT barker, Anzac Highway (Plus some streets around my local area), Marion road, Sir Donald Bradman Road, and a bit of Port Wakefield road set. Waiting for it to come onto the live map is torture
I only found out about Waze last night. Using it were ever I go.
I live in the Belair area. However I spend alot of my time in and around Flinders Uni, Medindie Gardens and out in the hills.
I’d love to map out Belair, Blackwood and Flinders first. Then slowly move to the main roads to connect the north up and get the area around Collingswood and Prospect completely done.
Eventually I’ll do out in the hills. Oh, and Mallala Raceway, just for the hell of it… haha!
I’m still waiting for my first trip to appear in cartouche, However I have done a fair bit of playing around. I got Adelaide Zoo as a POI, and did half of Flinders Uni. (gotta wait for permissions to finish that one off… woops!) It does seem a bit impossible to use at times. Would be fanastic for it to have its own GUI like google earth has. Ultimately that is up to the developers though… That sort of stuff is completely out of my forte!
Seems like we just have to recruit someone from out far north and we will have pretty much have all sides of the city being mapped. Was quite impressed with how well the city has been done, how long have both of you been using Waze?
What do I have to do to get more permissions? just wait for my trips to be uploaded? Would be good to work on areas that I haven’t driven yet.
Yeap, you’re joining as it’s all being mapped out now…
All of Adelaide is completely mapped, Ive been mapping my route from down South to Adelaide, been taking a shitload of different routes just to map them out. Will be travelling 2hrs south this weekend, will get that mapped out as well.
The main use will be once we’ve got it all mapped out, we need people to start using it wherever they drive. That’s when it becomes cool. On my way to the city, it told me Goodwood road was blocked in a section, travelling 1km/h.
When I got there 10 minutes later, there was a car broken down on the left lane, causing halts. If everyone else was using Waze, you can see the fastest route and avoid any blocks, etc.
How do you know my surname? I’m at a loss as to which Dave I know lives in the Hallet Cove Area…
Yeah, the way it works is decribed well on the videos that come with the software.
Seems handy, as I HATE traffic, yet do most of my driving during peak hour when doing across town trips, so this is something I need.
Slowly getting use to how everything works. However things like plotting Main road all the way out to Chandlers hill road from Belair, then it crashing is just frustrating!
Edit:
Managed to get Belair rd, Main rd, Shepards Hill rd and Uni drive done… It’s actually frustrating using cartouche!
Can you at least delete my surname from your post for my privacy?
Guess time will tell who you are eventually.
It’s not crashing on my phone (iPhone 3GS) Cartouche keeps crashing on my computer. things like trying to select a street and just never loads up to edit details and stuff.
Lol, the cbd only took me about a week (I’m just doing it in my spare time) And i’m still working on main roads - i figure once they are on, the primary routes will work. South road is killing me, though, because i have been using aerial view to map the roads, but with the shots 2-3 years out of date the Anzac Highway underpass and Port River Expressway don’t show up. Ah well, i’ll get to it. I’ve got the area bordered by Marion road, Anzac Highway, Morphett Road/Airport and Sir Donald Bradman Drive done too, just to try doing suburban streets.
Either way, thanks for the help mapping out your areas, the further you drive and record new roads, the more the map lets you edit.
I live in the city and spend a lot of time down South so I have busily started trying to fill in the rest of the city and places like Cherry Gardens. I just hope for this service to work that the live updates are used for traffic info etc.
I think the idea is that if the map is starting to be good enough and there are a few wazers then more would be attracted to use it. With more wazers there would be better traffic data.
That’s what I’m hoping will happen in Canberra at least.
Well, I’m still mapping away here - if any of you have looked at cartouche in the area from the airport, through plympton and each side of morphettville, You may notice a lot of streets getting filled in! I’ve been busy at it, believe me!
So. I noticed something. A while back, I’m pretty sure there was another area manager down south. Now, I seem to be the only one in SA. Is cartouche hiding the other managers? Did we lose one? and is there anyone else as an area manager in SA?
Really thinking of asking for Area manager status for the whole of SA…
I just installed Waze on the weekend. I generally hang around the north east so hopefully I can map that area a little better. One thing that puzzles me is how my driving around will update roads. I have driven gorge road a number of times over the last few days but it hasn’t appeared. Do I have to reach a certain points total before the options become available or is it another app I need? BTW I’m using Android.
You will have an option to turn Road Recording on. Turn it on when you just before driving on to a road that isn’t on the map, and turn it off again, when you have returned to a mapped road, and you can do so safely.
I have just found Waze and have begun mapping.
I live down south and do a lot of driving in the Hills and Fleurieu, so will at least be able to get some of those main routes in.
Not sure how much time will be needed to then do the updates, but will do what I can.
cheers
Darren
I have been having a go at editing some of my first new roads.
One section around Hawthorndene already had some pieces, but didnt align very well in reality.
I have been trying to edit it to clean up, but I don’t have enough privileges to create some of the sections.
Here it is below - a bit of a dog’s breakfast around there, but I have sorted some of it out.
Don’t feel you have to do all the updates yourself. Never be put off recording roads because you don’t know if or when you can edit them on the website. They’ll wait for you. Or someone else will get to them.
I find new road records are a good indicator of where I should focus my map editing efforts. I like to know that where I’m adding roads will actually be used by someone. And I know other map editors feel the same.
