As my username suggests, my name is Shane. I joined the Waze community a little over a week ago and am already getting hooked. I look forward to sharing my deep knowledge of Adelaide and a large part of the state with the Waze community. In my job as a traffic controller I have travelled almost everywhere in the state, to places such as Tarcoola in the west, Lyndhurst in the north and all over the riverland, mallee and South East. Besides all this driving I also drive on my days off for leisure.
I have read all the map editing guidelines and feel I have a reasonable understanding of what is expected but I am open to feedback and criticism where it is needed. I have already added some missing streets to WIngfield, Dry Creek and Belair and hope that these additions are ‘up to scratch’
Look forward to being an active participant in the SA Waze Community!
Great to have you onboard! If you have any questions then please ask away. If you want feedback on your edits you can post a permalink to them and we can take a look!
Hi Shane.
Great to hear you are enjoying Waze. As Gav has said, we have a great community here who are more than willing to help you out. As you come from a traffic and roading environment you are already familiar with road layouts and junctions in Australia, so you have a good idea of how roads look and should work.
If you are unsure of anything, ask in the Australian Forums and we can provide you guidance and support.
Thank you for the warm welcome. As requested, here is a permalink to one area in Wingfield I have added. https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat=-34.83817&lon=138.55479&layers=420&env=row
I did leave the turn restrictions off of South Tce ‘switched on’ until I was satisfied that my mapping was accurate but I see that ituajr has fixed this, which is a affirmation in my mind that my editing was up to scratch.
I do hope that making edits to existing roads is not seen as ‘stepping on others toes’ I have made a couple of edits to some roads already and made an alignment change in another location. Apologies if I have missed a etiquette point in that regard.
Once again, thank you for the welcome and I look forward to contributing where, and how ever I can.
Shane, just a reminder (and you probably know this already), don’t trust the aerials from GMaps 100%. They can be out of date in some areas, so we don’t mind if you change the alignment of a road if you know first hand that this is the case. Same applies in reverse. If you see a road that does not follow GMaps, always check to see when it was last updated as this may also suggest a recent realignment.
If in doubt, ask in the Forums.
Also please ensure that your junction turns are correctly enabled/disabled and any adjoining junctions are also correctly set.
As you ‘grow’ in Waze, your available editing area and User Level will increase where you have driven. You can then request to become a Area Manager which gives you access to an area of your choice which is outside your normal editing area. Australia is a Self Managed country and all Area Manager requests are considered and voted on by the Regional Managers team.
Welcome to the local Waze team. :D. As others have said don’t be afraid to post a question or ask one in the chat window in the editor. Everyone is willing to help you any way they can.
You may come across some roads you are unable to edit due to insufficient permissions. You can post in the AU Unlock and Update Requests where you can post an unlock and update requests.
Don’t do like some others and just leave the new roads unconnected or draw a new road next to the existing one to connect up to ones you can edit.
Enjoy editing the map, it can be somewhat addictive. :o
Hi welcome, welcome, welcome
I have been involved in a bit of outback editing in Port Pirrie and Port Augusta and other remote locations so glad to have more people onboard
As I learned recently you can use the toggle Shift “Z” to identify junctions on the map at 100m zoom that are restricted, this I found is a great help to review your own work as well as others work.
I have been busy in Belgrave with a waze editor who did all the streets but did not bother to set any turn restrictions lol (well it seemed like it).
