I have driven my preferred route for two weeks now yet waze still suggests other routes. How long will it take to get out of learning mode and suggest my preferrd route?
Just for reference, I live in Valencia CA (91355) and work in Westlake Village CA (91360), In the morning I take the 5 to the 405 to the 101. But in the evening I take the 101 to the 23 to the 126; not the 118 that is always suggessted. The 126 is out of the way but is still a viable route. Why can’t waze learn this?
…because that function is misnamed. Waze does, at the moment, learn your favorite DESTINATIONS.
If you start Waze in the morning at HOME, it will suggest WORK as your destination. If you start Waze in the evening at WORK, it will suggest HOME as destination, except thursdays when you will be sent to the GYM, as always on thursday. But - Waze will always pick the route it considers to be the best one to get you to that destination. That is how it works at the moment.
It is planned to work different: somewhere “in the near future” it will/may show your favorite route among the three alternative routes, and label it with a small heart-shaped icon.
And the reason for not learning routes is because specifying a route is against the core functionality of Waze. This type of feature is hard to do because at the moment, Waze, once it thinks there is a better route, will auto-update and reroute you. Just because you plan a route to start with doesn’t mean Waze will stick with it, again, because it is a core function of Waze to pick a better route based on current conditions. To force it to a route and not re-route affects many areas of the code.

I am having problems in that my preferred route is NEVER provided in the 3 options that are given when I drive to my brother’s house (route taken about 1-2 times per week). I am relatively new to Waze, so I don’t know if there is anything I can do about that or not, but the app continually tells me to turn around, even though I know for a fact I am taking the fastest route to his house.
Oh well - love the app in general, it has saved me time on other routes, so I am willing to deal with it! 
There could likely be a map problem(s) on the route you take that need to be corrected in the Waze Map Editor in order for Waze to route you that way.
If you post details in a new thread in the following forum, someone can take a look. Details such as:
I had a similar issue with a route I take all the time. When I got off the freeway, I entered a secondary country highway which runs straight north for 15km. Then a left, and a right, then I’m there.
What I was finding was, as soon as I got off the freeway, waze was trying to get me to turn left, and follow small country roads instead of staying on the secondary highway. Certainly was not the fastest route.
When I looked at the route in the editor, I found there was a right turn restriction near my destination that was wrong, which was causing a wrong direction from waze over 10km back from where the actual error was.
Where do you live? (-ish)
If that is the case this is NOT a similar issue. Only if the various routes are correct in the map you can expect Waze to make a plausible selection among them.
If you want other Wazers to have a look at your routes it helps if you give us a permalink.
I drive the same way to work every day, and all the way down the hill Waze tries to make me turn at every cross street to take a different route straight down the hill that is steep and dangerous with many cross roads and stop signs that people roll through due to steepness of the hill. It will not learn my preferred route.
I’d like to be able to tell Waze to never suggest the steep and dangerous route. It might be shorter, but it is not faster because of the frequent stops. The constant nagging to turn, turn, turn off my preferred route makes me need to turn … it off.
Have you checked your preferred route in the edit map? There may be turn restrictions, incorrect one way streets, or other errors that is causing Waze to try to route you off that road…
If nobody has driven those alternatives much waze might think they’re quicker than in real life. Every now and then take a “wrong” route provided by waze just to help such scenarios. Especially if wazers are sparse in your area!

Waze often suggests a poor route for me, on various different journeys, and as soon as I start driving my route, it immediately re-routes and shows a shorter journey time. So even Waze does actually know that my route is best.
I don’t get nagged to turn round, or anything like that.
The reason for this problem is this business of preferring certain types of road over others (I assume), because usually in these circumstances it’s trying to route me a few extra miles to get onto a major road.
Personally I’d rather save time and fuel and go the shorter, faster route.
This is fine for routes where I know the best way, but out of my area I’ve been sent on trips 20-30 miles longer. Somewhat irritating. (Also of course going these routes means travelling at higher speeds to make the same time, because of Waze’s preference for major routes, so you actually use a lot more petrol than simply the extra mileage suggests.)
When I choose routes, and I’m presented with a list of routes, and the client says “teach Waze your preferred routes by simply driving them several times,” it isn’t actually talking about the path to my destination?
It’s difficult to twist my brain into believing they aren’t suggesting that it will learn my preferred path, and maybe list it as a choice, with a heart icon…
It should be marked with a heart, but that function is broken ATM…
As Waze is all about finding the best route, your preferred route will not nescessarily be the first advised route, but it should be one of the alternatives.

As i understand the video waze will automatically learn my prefered routes to favourite destinations and then in future inform me before i set off,to work in the morning for example,if there are any problems.
But having read some other posts in this section am i right to believe waze will overide the prefered route for the fastest route ?
Ive used waze now to work for about ten days,using almost the same route every day but it always wants me to take the motorway,even telling me to do a u turn away from quiter roads into busy trafiic 
Oh and auto learn is switched on and im using iphone 4s,version 3.1
Just be aware that the video, and the on screen text (as seen just above your post) miss-states the actual function. It learns your frequent destinations, not the actual routes. While annoying at times (okay darn right often), the idea is that if we tell it what way we are going to go, it will limit it’s ability to dynamically route around traffic. Thus you can’t specify or teach it a set route, just destinations.
I don’t really think the video or the text are mis-stating the function.
There are two different functions.
The “Auto-learn routes to frequent destinations” function. This is mislabeled. Waze will learn your destinations (if you have this setting enabled). If you leave for work every weekday morning, then when you fire up waze on a weekday morning, waze will pop up with a message that says something like “Are you going to work?” with a default of yes and will then route you to the work destination. Waze will however route based on your settings, typically the fastest route. This functions doesn’t really have anything to do with learning routes, but rather with learning destinations.
The “preferred route” function. If you drive the same way from point A to point B all the time, the video states that waze will learn that route. If you then ask waze for a route from point A to point B, waze should have learned your preferred route. If this preferred route is not the fastest (or best based on your settings) then it would be presented as one of the alternative routes marked with a heart symbol. Thus, you should be able to teach Waze your preferred routes by simply driving them several times as the screen text says. However, as stated above this function is currently broken.
Hey WAZE, this problem has existed for 3+ years. How long does it take to RENAME the setting to avoid the confusion?
