Instead of going straight, this user is being directed to turn right, do a U-turn and turn right again… Anyone got a clue?
To better diagnose these routing problems, try using WME Route Speeds Script. It will show you real-time and historical traffic data between segments.

It’s interesting to compare the data at all three times; the average speed for the odd detour is always faster. At 18:30 it also takes less time then going straight through. Waze always picks what it believes is the smoothest and predictable route.
Problems with the configuration here at West Hunt Club & Woodroffe Ave.
West Hunt Club Rd is yet another example of a road that shouldn’t be divided. It doesn’t follow any of the wiki criteria for its current configuration.
Neither does Woodroffe Ave, May 2015 streetview images suggests that these are soft medians. Even a motorcycle can easily negotiate this soft median. There doesn’t appear to be any signage that suggests you can’t go over it.
The temporary solution here is to reduced the length of the median segments in order to prevent u-turn suggestions: https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Junction_Style_Guide/Intersections#Avoiding_U_turns_in_box_and_partial_box_intersections
Why are the median segments on to parking lot & private roads set to “street”?
This sort of instruction is actually pretty common at busy intersections. Waze’s data suggests that the approach shown is faster than waiting for the street light.
Sometimes, this is actually true… but that doesn’t make it desirable.
Basically, this is a “WAD” - works as designed. We have to do things like undivide (the process formerly known as unsplit) those streets to fix this.
I’m the one having the problem at this intersection. From the looks of maneouvre’s post, I should drive strsight thru if the light is green and turn right, do a quick U-turn and turn right again to avoid the light. Sounds like something that is done in Toronto.
I changed the median to parking lot rd…it seems to add just enough penalty to route as desired now…
thx YggY, I’ll give it a try on Thursday. I’ve had the same issue in another part of town where it had me pull off the highway (going over 100) to do a uTurn and pull back on the same highway. I can’t imagine that that would ever save time. If I ever catch it doing that, I’ll be sure to report it like I did this time.
A low-effort, more elegant solution would be to ensure all the median stubs are less than 15 metres. Waze won’t usually route you through those u-turns in that case.
Any L4 willing to give that a shot? It’s just over 15m now.
Done. FYI: the number may be 15m, or it may be 10m. To be safe, I made this “stub” 9m.
Is there any dispute over using <15m segments and the proper turn angles to prevent U-turns?
We’ve heard that <15m may not be the threshold, and it may be <10m.
