When NOT to split example

I ran across this neighborhood today and thought it was a pretty good example of a “when NOT to split a road” …

This area has MANY issues, so let’s go over them…

  1. Guidelines on splitting roads, if you haven’t already read the Wiki, please READ THE WIKI !!! The Relevant section is " When NOT to split a road

The most important part of this is :

A road should be split if:

GPS tracks show a clearly definable gap (blank area) between the color-by-azimuth arrows at the 100m zoom level.
U-Turns are required to properly make turns that are blocked by a median.
It is an Interstate Highway (USA) or other Limited Access Highway using the “Freeway” road type.

A road should not be split when:

There is a curb or non-drivable median less than 5m wide between lanes of travel (see exceptions above).
The non-drivable median is interrupted by a cross segment at most intersections.
There is a center turn lane (any width) between directions of travel. Splitting this type of road created problems when people turn from the middle lane because there is no road for the navigation to follow.
(Just because) Google Maps or other mapping source show it as a split road.

So take a look at the picture (I know it’s limited, but I have 256 k to work with here!)… The median is less than 5 meters (roughly 15-20 feet) wide. At the 100m zoom you cannot see a gap between the arrows. You are not required to drive past a cross street, make a uturn and come back in order to move from one segment to another.

In addition to the above guidelines look at what’s happened. Various editors, with good intentions, have at one time or another come to this area to fix problem reports, and we’ve ended up with two way segments where there should be 1 ways, and take a look at that square intersection looking like a roundabout from minecraft! Good night!

So please, I beg you, especially AM’s (Level 3 and higher), PLEASE read the wiki guidelines, do NOT make the map look like Google Maps, use official sources of mapping info (there’s a post here for Missouri Map Resources), and if you’re in an area with problem reports, “fan out” a bit and look to see if there are problems “down the road” causing the users to report and it puts the pin just off the screen of the problem (i"ve seen that happen a lot).

In addition to the other issues the new segments created when this was split were set to default to Ill. (wrong state) and didn’t have city or name associated (boxes checked). Additionally turn restrictions were wrong. Lots of issues folks!

Are you exhausted, now?

You’re absolutely right as far as the guidelines, but one major shortfall of unsplitting this road would be if you approach any one of those addresses on the eastbound side from the east, i.e. along the westbound lanes, Waze will not navigate to them correctly if the road is not split, telling you to turn left into those addresses (through the median) as if it was just a single (striped) roadway, rather than going to the next opening and making a u-turn.

We have that issue in New Jersey along many major highways that are divided by a tall yet narrow “Jersey Wall” barrier (maybe 1m wide, tops), so editors unsplit the road and now Waze does not navigate correctly to POIs on the other side of the highway. Rather than telling you to go to the next u-turn, as it would on a split roadway, it simply tells you to turn left into your destination as you pass by it - rather unsavvy if you ask me.

I wish I would have been able to post more picture, farther along the loop the houses are on both sides. Testing with live map revealed (probably due to the other issues like turn restrictions and unconnected segments) that routing was (no other term for it) jacked up.

All things considered, at least it’s routing now. I could see getting a guideline exception put in place for the wall situation. There is a major highway in my area with a thin tall wall, but that road already meets the other requirements for being split, so it was a non-issue (along with not being “residential”).

I’m willing to entertain the idea of re-splitting,

Times like this I wish we had a functional “Separating Line” type function. Something to say that addresses should be reached only from the side which they are on. When I drive to my front door I ALWAYS have to ignore Waze since it wants to take me across the street. (I live in a downtown area and pull up to the curb to drop off people and groceries. I park a block away.) It is MUCH quicker to get to the opposite side of the street or the corner next to my building. But if I want to go to my front door, I want to pull up to the door itself.

Have the champs looked into revising the split / no split guidelines for these situations?

During the meetup, we didn’t get to discuss this. I imagine because it wasn’t high on the list of issues. We did cover road types.

I believe that the split road type in the wiki applies unless unusual circumstances require the need for a split road, such as an address on the other side as the example by weezer. I know I am not providing much here, but I had many questions for the meetup, that just couldn’t get all out.
