Greetings from Hawaii. The link shows a recent UR, apparently from a tourist who posted it after landing. It concerns the San Diego airport. Here’s the text:
Problem: Going from Niagara rd near ocean beach in San Diego to the San Diego airport routed me through some closed military base. They didn’t look too happy but said it happens frequently.
I answered that there is a chronic problem with Google Maps having airport markers in the middle of the runway, which drives the back-road routing. We have similar problems here – in Honolulu and, if you look to the right on the link, there’s a UR about the same thing at little Lihue Airport.

I’ll submit a correction to Google Maps, but someone with editing privileges here might want to complete the lower field for the Waze Place Area. Though when you search in WME, the marker seems correct, I’m assuming that this Wazer used the auto-complete list while typing in search, which often delivers the Google result.

Hello, San Diego and several other airports are currently like this around the US. I assure you that everything on Waze side is correct and will route correctly if used. Please feel free to submit a request to google. I have sent about 15 so far. But maybe they’ll listen if other people send them too. For now I have a canned response I copy and past into UR’s that explains the problem and how to use Waze instead of google for the POI marker. I post that on any SAN related UR’s and then close them.

Failing a correction from Google, the removal of Guantanamo, Iwo, and Vera Cruz, and maybe Guadalcanal would eliminate the problem.
Since these roads are not open to the public and anyone in there knows where they are going and is not using Waze to navigate, it could be argued that those roads should not be mapped at all.
I had a similar problem at John Wayne. I deleted the PLRs and a stub that went to the tower parking lot and the URs came to a screeching halt. I also added an “SNA” location pin at the terminals, and for editor reference, a “Location of JWA Google Pin” pin located on top of the Google pin so editors can see how close the perimeter roads are to the pin compared to the terminal roads.
Future development? FAA does not permit buildings within 700ft of an active runway, so it is unlikely that future commercial development in the area of the closed base will result in routable roads along the airfield perimeter.
But ultimately, the problem needs to be fixed because we can’t delete roads to correct the routing issue at every airport in the world. Many have legitimate roads that need to be routable that are closer to the Google pin than the terminals.
Yes and no. I have not used it. I have looked into Mapmaker but it didn’t seem to get along with my browser… I was having trouble doing anything, but did not spend a lot of time with it. Seemed to be a similar issue as the “new” google maps… things are very slow.
But I’ve also heard some horror stories about Google blowing off their equivalent of URs.
Are they as bad as I’ve heard? Seems that it’s not even worth trying according to some editors.
That link is not about using MapMaker, which CAN be as bad as you’ve probably heard, and can also be a breeze - depends on the particular situation.That’s not a discussion for this thread.
The link in my last post is a new form where you can request Google pin moves and they are handled by Waze editors who have generally worked their way up to higher ranks of the Google hierarchy, and can more easily handle some of the tougher problems. They’ve even had some success with Airport building/grounds pins, I believe I’ve heard. There’s actually a post about it somewhere in the forums, but I’ve lost it for the moment.

No, I had not heard about that. I thought that was a link to the GMM issue report (and the reference to the Waze PL had me confused).
