Area Manager Tools. Your Input please

bkofford, I do wish they had this for you… I am the new area manager, and wow are you all over the place with reports. And all of them have no information in them. I have been trying to look at spots you have reported and doing my best to update what I can with no information what so ever. Can you please take some time and help close some of these up. I have been closing many of them if I can not see any issues (mostly wrong direction errors). Please, if you have something that you need help fixing just post a new request, with as much info as possible. If you are fixing stuff on your own be sure to close out your own user request.

I agree. A lot of the “wrong directions” reports should contain more information. We should also see the current route the system had created for them and their actual driven route so we can see where the problem is. Sometimes you can figure it out but most often it is impossible to tell.

Some of the reports should require the user to enter more information when they have the ability to do so before they become reports. Some things like General Error should notify the reporting user that they have a report to complete with a link to the map and error report so they can fill out the rest of the information. I have no problem spending my time fixing problems as long as I am not spending most of my time trying to figure out why something was reported.

When you have someone like bkofford in your area, it is a waste to not be able to fix the problems that they report do diligently.

As for tools.

  • A list of most important problems to fix
  • More zoom out levels. My area covers about 6 screens at full zoom out
  • City level forums
  • Area Managers own colored square on the map should take precedence over neighboring managers.

Most importantly, I still think a windows editor client would be easier to use and maintain and cause less strain on the servers. I’m sure I have much other stuff but it is late and I am tired.

Even better would be an editor that allowed editing and saving the edits all at once, without touching the server. OpenStreetMap has a flash editor that has this option. It’s not as intuitive, but it’s much faster.

I would like to be able to see “streets” at a zoom 1 or 2, instead of 3 and higher. This would make it much easier to find streets that have been labeled incorrectly and fix them. I don’t like to work at zoom higher then 2 on my little laptop screen.

Sometimes I have a reported problem that is so old that I doubt the original sender would even remember what he sent. I would like the ability to close a problem without an email being sent back to the original sender.

how do I contact my area manager?
or how do I become area manager?
I live in Oshawa Ontario Canada in the Durham region

Look at your area using the update map. Under the layers panel, turn on “area managers”. Areas that are covered by an area manager would be shaded with a color. If there is no area manager in your area, and you wish to become one, send and email to alpha@waze.com telling them that you wish to become an area manager for your area.

I would like to be able to search for a specific city, and then get a list with links to all streets that are tagged under that city. This to be able to clean up wrongly placed and spelled cities.

And most importantly so that the traffic reports makes sense

And my other “most wanted” features are as mentioned earlier, wider zoom levels and notifications.

Oh yeah, that would be a wonderful one!

Great ideas here.

A few things that I’d like to see in Cartouche are:

  • The user’s directionality on there reports, particularly on “Turn Not Allowed”. I’ve a road running through my area that is covered by “Turn Not Allowed” reports and I’ve no idea which direction the user is talking about. * Something that allows not showing some of the Road Levels when needed. I’ve got places that have bridges on top of bridges on top of bridges on top of bridges. It would be great to be able to turn off, say, Level 2 and up so I can work on everything from Level 1 on down unimpeded. * Similarly, it would be helpful to have a visual cues to what level the roads are on. It would save a lot of viewing individual Edit Details panels.* I’d like to be able to turn off displaying road names. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to zoom way in to make sure the road was going the correct direction because the name of the road covered the entire segment.* City Borders* Bring back “Select Entire Street”* As ecstatic as I am at being able to delete nodes, it’d be even more wonderful if lone nodes just went away by themselves whenever they are completely disconnected.

Yes, please bring back “Select Entire Street” and have the unattached node automatically delete themselves.

It would be great if area managers could cause the system to ignore a certain user’s GPS points for a single drive. I have map errors being reported because of GPS data. There is a neighborhood less 0.10mi away from an interstate and when some one has a bad GPS lock Waze thinks they are driving in the neighborhood instead of the highway, I belive the error number is 60. Bad GPS locks are also causing several instances of problem 52.

If an area manager could cause the system to ignore these bad points for maybe one mile in each direction this should clear up that problem.

I would also like some tool to declare that all of the roads within a selected region are two way streets. More than half of the edits I do consist of changing a streets direction.

a way to make bulk changes. example: i’ve seen large areas where all the roads are listed as “no entrance” when they are clearly two way residential neighborhood streets. as it stands each street has to be meticulously selected. something like a window to select would be good.

personally, i’d like to see a stand alone app for pc or mac rather than a web based. but that’s probably asking way too much.

a choice between floating tool palates and more standard toolbars that are docked so they don’t obscure parts of the map or controls and yet are still readily accessible.

how about a way to more easily see overlapping / hidden segments?

have the road selected automatically come up with the geometry editing grips, while still allowing one to select the edit details in the tool palate.

more keyboard shortcuts and have them indicated on the tool palates as well.

I guess there are so many things that I can think of, but I have realized that they are all leading the interface to be like the AutoCAD I use at work all day…

When editing the map, I often find myself looking to Google Maps or Mapquest to get alternate sources for street names etc. each one sometimes has information that the other doesn’t.

what I’d like to see is a way to click a link perhaps that would open a browser window to one of those sources (perhaps customizeable, or from a list) and then have it automatically zoomed into the same area and perhaps at the same magnification.

another problem I have is when selecting roads etc, there is a little text “flag” that appears attached to it. sometimes this little flag gets in the way of additional selections. for example If I select a few roads and I accidentally select an intersection node in the process I want to unselect that one item because it keeps me from editing the other roads selected. Sometimes what gets in the way is the text flag, sometimes its the map problem indicator. the problems can be turned off momentarily, but the little flag stays there always.

This might help you

Let’s work on landmarks or certain ones or how about a blackout area tool… I along with others will occasionally map gas station, shopping center, etc… parking lots so that false triggers aren’t set. Instead of mapping roads that look badly (or nice if you take the time) and clutter the map, it would help if parking lots and gas stations, etc… were active. That way well… you know…

All above are great ideas that I would like to see as well.

Now that the points system has been updated is there any update or ETA on when we might get some of these suggestions in cartouche for the area managers?

When a wanted route isn’t approved, I would like to get notified just where it stops, so that its easier to pinpoint and solve the problem.
