Area Manager Tools. Your Input please

Hi Area Managers: We’re looking into improving general functionality, notification and usability for area managers. It would be great if you guys could list what you think would be the idea set of tools and information needed to run your area properly as well as where you would like to see it and how you would like to be notified.
Thanks - Yael

  1. Pending roads for deletion: When i click “select” in list, it zoom to area, but doesn’t select road, so I have to guess which one is it.
  • A notification for user reports. There could be a preference for this, whether to receive a new email immediately every time or to receive a digest email daily.
  • A listing of open reports in my area. It would be nice if this were in a panel in Cartouche similar to the Archive. Note that I’m not sure how the Pending panel works as I’ve never managed to have it load.
  1. A Daily/Weekly Email of map requests waiting for action in our area. (This would include deletions, edits, requests from client, etc.)

Thanks basically it for me!

  • Searchable map problems (find all problems with a specific number, like 22, 21)

A way to enable/disable these emails people are asking for?

I’d rather see a list somewhere when I log in.

Yeah, exactly. Have a selection between immediate, daily, weekly, and never for emails, and include lists both in a panel in Cartouche and in a list in the Dashboard similar to the Archived routes.

  1. List of recorded roads that have not been finalized. Currently I just hunt for the little red lines in the map, but it would be nice just to get a list and have it zoom me right to the road. I have a lot of people that like to record roads, but never log into the website to finalize them.

  2. Be able to mark non-resolvable problems to be resolved/un-resolvable/etc. IE:

999 - I’ve personally never had a 999 ramp error that I had to do anything to the intersection. So the 999 is going to be there forever

Any of the codes that are based on GPS tracks - I do find problems with bad intersections from these, but there are a lot of them that are just due to bad GPS tracks. I would love to be able, after reviewing a problem, to mark it as either resolved or un-resolvable kinda like update requests. This might need to be a per person thing, because I might think something is okay… maybe some other area manager doesn’t.

  1. List of currently known map issues. This might not be needed if #2 could be implemented. But in lieu of number 2, a list would work, because then you can just scroll through the list and at least for that sitting you could know which ones you have reviewed.

  2. list of update requests, and keep closed ones around for a while, so they can be reopened in case the resolution isn’t correct. Or maybe at least have an option to show closed request on the map so they can be clicked on.

Notification, notification, notification  The same things that everyone else has requested. Keep it simple. Some people like having email notification some don’t. So maybe something in your ‘My Dashboard’ about update requests, pending edits, etc…

How about more client options for area managers? For example, you could have a way to auto-update your client maps in your managed area automatically (without having to use navigation to update the maps). This could be allowed only for people with 4+ stars, and only within the area they manage.

This would be useful for area managers to quickly see their changes on the client without having to go through the tedium of navigation or “show on map”.

Whew, I don’t know, my managed area is enormous and I haven’t even been to all of it… that sounds like it’d be a server load nightmare.

Maybe we could modify this to updates to map tiles we drive through (without navigation on). Be a compromise between server load and still be a perk. I personally don’t need to see my updates in the client, unless I’m driving by there. If I need validation, I check Live Map.

Hehe yes sorry I should’ve clarified, I meant just update those tiles of your managed area that you are actively driving through, and only if there is a more recent tile available than what you have.

My reason for this suggestion is that although checking Live Map is good validation, sometimes you only notice a problem as you actually drive through the area and look around. So for those cases it’d be nice to have the most recent version of that tile on your client.

Thanks everyone. This is very helpful. Please keep on updating this thread as you come across other ideas. We’ll start planning soon and update you as we go.

We’ll soon release a new cartouche version that has primarily graphical changes and a few simplifications that are targeted at NEW users. as per this post http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=367#p2032. Just a heads up, so you won’t think we’ve neglected to add any of the changes we are discussing here for area managers

BTW - RallyChris, seems like we’ll add a table of newly recorded roads in your area to this upcoming cartouche version. And yet, it’ll be worth waiting a few days to give those who recorded them a chance to come and edit them themselves.

Anther idea and not just for area managers is a stand alone client, one that just logs your location and does server side compare after uplode. This could be a valuable tool. A for instance, last week I went wazing on my motercyle, I dont need to se the screen just record the location that I pre planed ahead of times. This could save bettery screen life etc…

I would like to be able to see a list of problems reported by me (not just those in my area) so I can make sure to clean up after myself. That would allow the other area managers (cough dougm cough) to spend more time fixing problems reported by people who are less likely to fix them themselves.

I’d like to see a way to be automatically notified of new problem reports in my area.

I would like to be able to search for directions in Cartouche. I find that seems to be a good way to highlight connectivity / incorrect direction problems quickly.

Currently I only seem to be able to search for an address in Cartouche.

Besides the already suggested email notifications, a way to better communicate to users who submit an update request.

Sometimes a get a General Update request with no info and nothing looks incorrect on the satellite images and there are little to no map errors. I end up updating the request asking for more info but never get a response. 2 or 3 weeks later I end up removing the request only for someone to put it back up with no additional info.
