I don’t believe it applies in QLD. Uncertain on other states. In the absence of other comments, you’re probably safe to roll it out nationwide in the wiki (it can change in future if a need arises).
Just a heads up - Average Speed Zones in the ACT apply to all vehicles. We don’t have any heavy vehicle only ones.
There’s been some media coverage on this recently and I took the time to read up on the politics. It seems The Nationals made it an electoral promise not to introduce it for cars in NSW and the current and previous government are not keen to break the election promise. However, it’s clear that with a change of government or if the road toll in NSW continues to climb, it would be very easy to see a change to align with other jurisdictions.
That said, I think Wazers in NSW would benefit from a clear direction on how to proceed on the matter. If we remove them/don’t map them, and there’s a policy change later, it would be a 2 hours work to implement them again as all the average speed zones (along with speed cameras and red light cameras) are all listed on the RMS website.
Did we want to actively flag and remove existing cameras?
Pius there is a section of the Federal Highway with the Average Speed Zone Flag set.
The Highway has a Level 3 Lock. I have marked the start of the zone but have no way of seeing where the zone ends.

I have swapped the comment here for another one with the wording came up with.

My understanding is that Qld only has the point 2 point, or average speed zone/camera system. And it is applicable to all traffic through the system, not just cars or heavy vehicles.

There are not many average speed zones in Victoria, have only encountered two. According to:
https://www.camerassavelives.vic.gov.au/how-cameras-work/camera-types/point-to-point-cameras
These are the only two in Victoria.
They apparently both perform instantaneous speed checks, at all cameras, as well as an average speed check based on the shortest distance between the two points.
Both apply to all traffic, not just heavy vehicles.
[Edit]
Apparently both contain multiple average speed zones in both directions. 2 in each direction for Peninsula Link, and 4 in each direction for the Hume Fwy.
Having a fixed speed camera system inside a point to point system seems to defeat the purpose of the p2p system to me. The point of the p2p system is that it ensures you stay under the set average speed limit for the entire length, but allows you to overtake slower cars in the outside lane above the set speed limit. You just need to lower your speed limit again afterwards.
Having the fixed speed limit camera ruins the system. Again, all it does is forces cars to go slower across that line and then speed up afterwards, when the design of the p2p system is to allow traffic to move at a constant speed.
Dumb design and decision.
I would have though it was one big ASZ with multiple detection points along the way (to cover the individual segments and also the instantaneous speeds).
Interesting. Do you have any details? Is this to cover drivers who enter or leave the ASZ other than at the ends?
The only info I have found is here:
https://www.camerassavelives.vic.gov.au/how-cameras-work/camera-types/point-to-point-cameras
May need adjustments in the map - eg, represent as multiple average speed zones, with a brief non-ASZ segment in between.
It shows up correctly when driving only the partial ASZ from the beginning, not sure about starting in the middle of the ASZ. I guess that would determine if we need to define multiple ASZs.
I think it definitely warrants Speed Cameras being added as well as the ASZ definition to warn drivers that they are also instantaneous speed cameras.

What was decided about safe-t-cams? Flag with the above comment to prevent confusion? I think it’s acgoo idea.
I agree that the above wording (mentioning Safe-T-Cams) is slightly more informative, and makes it easier for future editors to check what we’ve done.
I would also recommend locking comments related to Heavy vehicle cameras so they don’t get deleted by editors trying to add the cameras
I have a heavy vehicle related question.
Some roads are designated for light vehicles only with a ‘No Trucks’ or
No Trucks 3 Tonne’ sign. Should we map these so the data is captured?
If Waze adds a Truck option in the client the data will be ready to go.
The difference between this and an ASZ heavy vehicle camera is that the impact on drivers is not the same. Drivers should see no indication if the Restrictions are setup correctly.
I have two examples:
-
Allows certain types of vehicles only (I think new vehicle types have been added since it was setup.
Millewa Ave would not be used if the vehicle types Clean Air, Electric, Hybrid were selected. -
Prohibiting Trucks only
Kosciuszko Ave
I am not suggesting activly looking for Light Vehicle roads, but if we come accross them in our other editing, to mark as such.
Thoughts?

If weight restriction sign is displayed for a road, you must not use that road if the total weight of your vehicle, including its load, is the same as or heavier than the weight shown on the sign.

I’m not sure. Waze hasn’t (for years) indicated they are going to enable this feature so they might change it so adding in stuff now might break something n the future?
Has been discussed since 2012 https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33709
Thanks Travelling Gav,
Should I remove the Millewa Ave one that doesn’t allow the newer vehicle types or just convert it to one that prohibits Trucks?
I probably would as it is achieving nothing by having it there. Just keeps the map tidy with no unnecessary stuff.

Even people say they’re for heavy traffic I got caught for this cameras whilst I was driving an small car. We should be able to report those cameras and they not only for speed but also for mobile phone while driving!
