This doesn’t seem right to me but since it has a bunch of higher level editor’s names all over it I am just throwing it out there in case I am missing something!
In both cases none of the roads should be split which makes the bow ties obsolete. The Ramps are supposed to be At Grade Connectors but probably should not be there anyway. But they are not named in any case.
I’ve done a couple of cross-overs like that back when I didn’t like bow ties (this is probably one of them). These days I replace them with bow ties, they are much easier to work with and check all directions.
The ramps should be at grade (minor highway). Some editors the past 6 months have put a lot of ramps in where at grade connections should have been used. I’ve not been able to fix them all up.
These roads were originally split a long time ago. We’ve been avoiding the unsplitting of roads in Brisbane to avoid introducing errors and losing traffic data. I’ve been trying to discourage the new splitting of roads as well but unfortunately too many got split last year by editors who didn’t check the forums or who didn’t listen after directed towards several forum posts on the topic.
Feel free to change the ramps as you see them Gav. Also feel free to change to bow tie intersections but only ever do that if you have enough time in your current sitting to double check all traffic turns from all directions.
I’ve been leaving turning lanes unnamed, the client just picks up the next segment name which is the road you are turning onto anyway. That you you simply get the standard turn left onto xxx rd.
I have question about the way this is drawn. If I take the name off this segment which then runs straight onto the next segment because of the way it is drawn will you still get a turn left instruction or only a keep left instruction??
I am wondering if that segment should be broken (near where it crosses the sothbound lane of Beaudesert Rd) and a defined 90 degree be put in?? I did that on this second permalink because someone had named that whole section Lear St which wouldn’t be correct??
The first one may be a keep right. The turn must depart by more than 45 degrees to be considered a turn instruction and this one is ambiguous (I’ve not got my junction angles working since the latest wme update).
I have modified the 2nd link to show you what I would do.
Don’t introduce unnecessary junctions if you can avoid it.
Make the lane a street level as that is the lowest adjoining segment type.
Make the departure from the road you are turning from close to 90 degrees but zoomed right in so not noticeable on client map.
Leave with no name as it will pick up the name of the next segment.
I’ve modifed the bow tie just to the east (Compton Rd and Calam Rd) to show what I have been doing to guarantee the right instructions. It basically puts some geometry nodes near the centre and lines up the two directions coming into the junction. It’s a good idea when uncertain if the angle is small enough. I left the turn lanes for you to check the departure angles.
With the left turn anytime lanes I have not touched them at the moment because I want to just confirm that they would be no good at the moment? I think you would get a keep left instruction because the turn out is probably less than 45? I am thinking I should do what you did up at Lear St and do a very small but definite 90 degree turn off the main rd and then curve the lane around. Is that right?
The other option is to ditch the turn lanes altogether, really depends if the GPS traces of the turn deviate from the main intersection by more than about 50 metres.
OK great. I have changed that intersection. Apart from being split when it shouldn’t be I think it is good now. I will do other intersections the same as I find them. Unless you have any other suggestions/ requirements.
