Dealing with Update Requests

Hi,

Occasionally I got Update Requests that I am editor who originally started the conversation resolved by someone else. Buy yesterday I got 3 and that made me a bit irritated. It’s nor fair!
The United Kingdom/UR Guidelines states:

Is there a way I can comment on an closed UR (map issue)?
Or maybe a way I can find who resolved the UR and send him a message?

Thanks!
Regards,
Julian

Hi Julian

Don’t think of it as unfair, altho it would only be manners to send a message (make sure you tick the ‘follow conversation’ box before hitting ‘send’), however fixing issues on Waze is a team effort, you may well find that the URs have been dealt with by the AM or a CM.

You can see the closed URs by clicking on ‘show closed’ in the layers dropdown menu.

I would find out what and who did it from the Closed UR before firing off messages, I would also recommend not posting on the closed UR unless there is value to add to what has been done, end users don’t need to see negative comments between editors.

Hi Julian,

You are not alone in this, it happens to us all. It is often done by ‘helpful’ editors who are clearing URs they deem to be obsolete.

You should get an email from Waze telling you who closed the UR (and also a notification in the app, though these often give me an error):

If you know where the UR was then you can show closed URs using the menu in the top right of WME, they will show as green markers. If Waze is working correctly it should provide the name of the editor that closed it.

By clicking on their name it takes you to their profile and you should find a message button there is you wish to ask them politely what they have done to correct the problem (so you can learn of course).

If someone closes a report because they have been able to solve it where I haven’t then that is great but the reality is this mainly happens with editors making no effort to solve the original problem.

I (politely) ask those who do this to me to take a look at the wiki page: https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/United_Kingdom/UR_Guidelines

All the best

Thanks a lot guys!

That is what I am going to do when I find who closed the URs I commented on - ask them politely to read the Guidelines .

Thanks again!

It’s not just a case of good manners to give the editor who’d originally expended their time and energy in responding to the UR a chance to complete it, it’s also a case of AMs/CMs setting a good example to other editors by following the guidelines. Sometimes we’ll forget, sometimes the crap native UI design in WME allows us to close a UR without noticing our comment wasn’t added (how many times did I get burned by that design flaw before I included a patch for it in URO+…), but those should be exceptions to how we normally deal with URs, not examples of how we usually deal with them.

Generally speaking, as an AM I’d usually only step in and fix something myself that I know another editor has already responded to if it’s something that really does need fixing ASAP - e.g. borked routing on a major road. Otherwise, if I can see what the problem is, I’m more inclined to simply add my own comment on the UR and then let the responding editor deal with it in the same way they would if the original UR reporter had come back with more info of their own.

If I find a UR commented on by a fellow editor 7 or more days previously, I send a little ‘Bump ;-)’

I have found this sometimes elicits a response from the original reporter and if not gives a gentle reminder to the first responder. If nothing happens for a further 7 days, I feel it is ok to close the report.

I agree with you totally, if you wouldn’t do it in a real conversation/interaction why does that make a ‘virtual’ instance any different.

My wording is more set on the side of not there to create an argument, more to open up the interrupting responder to appologise.

Personally I hate the fact the ‘send’ button on the UR box tends to hide beneath the fold and I will type a message and then have to re-type it and re-send it, even after I have closed the UR.

(You don’t actually need to do this, as you will automatic follow any reports you comment on)

I didn’t see that anywhere and the last time I didn’t tick it I didn’t get updates, good to know it is supposed to be redundant tho…
