I spotted this UR by (presumably) @RTPeat on the map today, I wonder if this is maybe a good place for the discussion.
I think the most important thing to do would be to contact the local authority and make them aware of the state of the road markings here.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Waze doesn’t have a dangerous junction option (are you thinking of Difficult Turn?)
You wouldn’t get Give Way signs on a 20mph residential street and if the marking are worn that’s for the local council to deal with. The junction doesn’t come close to qualifying as a Difficult Turn.
I’d avoid adding Continue instructions at crossroads, this could lead drivers to expect to hear it at every Give way and Stop line. Drivers are ultimately responsible for their own driving and shouldn’t rely on a sat nav to tell them how to drive. Likewise we shouldn’t be ‘fixing’ the map to avoid certain routes, if the turns and route is legal it should be mapped as such.
You could suggest to the UR reporter that they report the poor marking at the junction to the local council. Does Fix My Street work in Scotland?
Was me that posted the note as whilst I could adjust the voice instructions I couldn’t mark it as dangerous.
With regards to getting the local authority to sort it, looking back through Google there haven’t been signs all the time Google have been sending around street view cars, the last time the lines are visible is in the 2009 image so the council has left it in this state for years. Lots of people locally when I say where it happened are aware and say accidents happen there all the time, but the council don’t seem to have bothered to do anything.
Looking at the GPS tracks most people seem to go right at the roundabout and up to a set of traffic lights at the junction of Lauder Road and Dunnikier Road, Waze is obviously going for Melrose Crescent because it’s a shorter quicker route, from what I understand marking the junction as dangerous should get it routing via the lights, but if someone has a better option that’s fine, my main concern is to save other Waze users from the nightmare I’m having.
Yes, was thinking of difficult turn - although looking at the discussions I can see there has already been some debate on setting the flag for poor visibility junctions such as these. The other option might be to set Lauder Road to be a primary street as that is the main exit from the hospital on that side of the site, and has a lot of GPS tracks.
Fix My Street doesn’t work in Fife - I’ve taken it up with the local MSP given how long the junction has been like that.
With regards to the comment about relying on the sat nav to tell me how to drive, certainly I’ll ignore some of the Waze routes as it attempts to take me up a single track lane that it regards as a few seconds quicker than a main A road, of which this is a similar issue. It’s certainly not a problem unique to Waze, both Apple Maps and Google will route that way. Sadly in this case I followed Waze and it took me through a badly maintained junction at the same time as a local was ignoring the 20 limit on the other road. Just a very expensive bit of bad luck.
