Is anyone else having problems with Waze connecting to the servers on Vodafone’s network?
At first I noticed the problem at home on Vodafone DSL and determined that it was a DNS resolution error. I solved this by changing my DNS settings to use the google public name servers. Since then the problem does not occur.
I’ve now realised that the same problem is happening on the mobile network. The symptoms are that Waze will display a line of red text below the clock saying ‘Searching Network’. I also get an error when tapping on the bottom right button to load the map errors, gas stations etc menu.
I’ve got a call logged with Vodafone support team and have finally got them to acknowledge that both the DSL and mobile network use the same DNS servers. My belief is that it is a problem with their DNS somewhere but have yet to prove it. I’m hoping they will change the DNS settings on a test APN so that we can try the google servers to prove my theory one way or the other.
What I need to know is whether other Wazers are getting the same problem on Vodafone. It would also be good to get feedback from people not having the problem as well so that I know whether it’s just me for some reason
Sometimes turning the phone off via airplane mode seems to help but not always.
Its very irritating and frustrating especially when there is full 3g service and I’m not getting the area for editing or am unable to upload a map issue, petrol price, etc.
It may not be DNS at fault, if theres a large amount of 3G activity at the time then there may not be enough bandwidth to connect with, just a strong signal to the tower.
I have however noticed the same issues, but only in one of the recent beta versions, so it maybe related to a networking change Waze have done. You may want to enable debug mode, have it happen, send logs (oddly this will somtimes work with the no network messsage), and contact Waze with the date and time of the issue (and when the logs accualy finished sending) and they can investigate.
back in January Vodafone gave me a couple of different APNs to try - one was a test APN - and then they said they had mated a change to the www.iphone-Vodafone.net.nz APN. Not sure exactly what they did but they did suggest it was DNS related.
All was well for a while and the it started happening again recently, and getting more frequent.
4square also has problems at the same time so it’s not just waze.
I’ll have to try your suggestion with logging in waze and see if the support guys can help at all to determine what’s happening.
