I responded to the following map update request. I found a poorly drawn road and fixed it up and added the house number. I did all of my edits on Aug 18, I believe.
My edits still do not show up in my client app (Windows Phone). Does that make sense?
While it doesn’t make sense, I’ve definitely seen it happen – and you can rest easy, it’s not your fault; it’s the app acting mildly retarded.
What I’ve found (with some help from forum posts I stumbled across in the past but can’t find with the search feature after five minutes of trying, so I can’t actually be helpful and link you to them… :)) is:
Don’t just drive by the location, make sure to get directions that force you to use that road. I’ve seen several references that one way to force a map tile update to your handheld is to request directions where the path goes through the tiles in question. The client seems to take that as a strong suggestion and says, “oh, you actually CARE about those regions since you’ll be driving through them, let me find out if I need to download a new version of that tile into my cache”
Force your phone to download the new map data near the area in question. When you get close to the location in question, hit up the menu and select Settings->Advanced->Data Transfer->Refresh map of my area. At the top you’ll see it say “Refreshing map data: 0%” and if new tiles are needed, that 0% will obviously increase to 100%.
It irks me pretty badly that in order to get new map data, you have to get directions through that area to indicate it “matters to you.” If your GPS indicates you’re driving through an area, shouldn’t that be a HUGE indicator that having the newest map data for the immediate vicinity REALLY MATTERS TO YOU?
Anyway, I’ll go work on finding my zen center and hope at least one of those tricks work for you.
Thank you Terry. That was a very helpful answer. I will presume then that my “customer” who requested the update did get the fix. I will do something on my end to see the update as well. That was not the only time I found my updates were not making it to the map, but, I believe, all of my examples fit your observation.
One other sanity check you can use: Waze’s LiveMap.
In my experience that’s usually pretty close to the latest updates. It sometimes lags a bit behind the maps in the application, but I’m okay with that – if Waze has to prioritize who gets new map data first, I’d certainly rather it be the mobile apps than the livemap.
