Fixing broken roads is a broken process?

Hi, I have an off ramp near my house ( actually 2 but seems one is fixed ) that hasn’t been updated in over a month.

I am not able to do much about it when I’m driving because it’s illegal here to use your phone while driving.

I just logged into the map editor, and it says you need to be level 5, I’m level 1.

How do I get this fixed? #1, and #2, how do I get “credit” for fixing it so that I can be able to fix things on my own. None of this seems intuitive or possible from the last half hour of looking around.

Thanks

With so little information there isn’t much that members on the global community side of the forums can do. Please search for your local community in the Local Forums by Country (Language) section.

That is where you will find editors with edit access to your area and that will be able to tell you how things work to request road unlocks or map updates for your street. If you ask them they could certainly walk you through the editing process.

When you logged in to the editor, that screen had several links to different resources to help you get started, including the wiki which is the definitive source on editing. The welcome page is an excellent place to start. Also, if you tell us what country you’re editing in (or, better yet, provide a permalink to the interchange in question), we can better help you find someone who can either fix it or unlock it and walk you through fixing it.

We lock things high like that to prevent new editors from coming in and “fixing” things before they really know what they’re doing; generally, only those high locks are for important roads and where there have been problems in the past. It’s not our intent at all to keep people from becoming proficient editors, but to allow higher ranking editors a chance to mentor lower ranks.

OK thanks for the reply.

I have watched the videos, and felt I was able to make this edit, only to see that it was locked. I was a little confused by the process of asking someone else to fix it, especially since when I’m in the area, I can’t make the turn. Would just driving through there make a difference?

I guess at the end of the day I was kinda wondering how one would “level” if I had to get someone else to make the edit. I tried getting someone in the chat, but no one was replying either. That being said, I really just want it fixed as I go through there all the time.

Here is the permalink to the intersection I was talking about.

The off ramp on the highway ( exit 123 ) says no straight through at Ford Dr. but that is not the case anymore. You can see that they have fixed turning left and right off of Ford Dr. onto the North Service Road, but the straight through off the exit hasn’t been fixed.

I didn’t realize there were local forums, I will check those out.

Hi swrdfish:

The way to “level” up is just to get involved and make good edits where you can. Every edit gives you points, and when you hit certain milestones, you’ll level up. Getting to L3 only takes a bit of perseverance and time and is not that difficult.

Roads like these are locked high because they’re of importance and the risk of someone making a well-intentioned but wrong edit is high. It’s generally recommended for new editors to cut their teeth on roads locked to their level - there’s plenty to do on the map even for roads locked to L1. When you notice an error on the map and the segments are locked higher than your level, you can request an unlock in this forum (where your message looks to have been moved to):

There are lots of Ontario based editors so I’m sure someone local will be happy to help you get started.
