Functional Classifications in St. Louis

Hello everyone!

I’ve returned to mapping after a while away and noticed that we are using the MODOT functional classification maps to determine the road type. I think this is an excellent idea. Perhaps the routing software will use this information to determine better routes around traffic events?

(As an aside, I saw this when working on Rte 364 in St. Charles and wondered why there were so many “major” and “minor” highways there. I downgraded a bunch of them before realizing the change and put them back. So if you were wondering who it was, it was me.)

I’ve started to fix all of the roads in St. Louis City and county and wanted to put something out to alert everyone in case there was some concern. It is a work-in-progress. I’ve managed to get nearly everything except the SE and NE corners of the city/county and the northern part of the county (namely, Florissant). I’ll be traveling through the area this weekend, so hopefully I’ll remember to have the app open and it covers the remaining area in my drive.

There are also some parts that I cannot update due to my L3 status and will need L4 or higher to change (these are mostly segments that intersect a freeway), but I will post them in the update requests or here if someone will agree to make the changes.

Thanks for your hard work. There are times when editors who are new, not familiar with the road type and definitions we use by browsing the forums, come and they see Major Highway in the small strip of city or through big cities. They will usually try to match to what they think is best for the area, based on the word description for the road type, instead of verifying the road type definitions as we have them now in the Wiki.

It will help and aid routing, it has been proven time and again. The algorithm is complex, compared to the first routing servers algorithms when it was first designed, this level of complexity has led to problems with the road types not being updated to some standard. What it also allows us now is for the roads that aren’t defined by FC, such as smaller residential areas, it allows more selection for use of the Primary Street road type where fit and needed. This greatly improves the connectivity to get routed to faster routes and potentially shorter routes.

Well, again, thanks for the post here in MO. If you need help with anything, you can always post here or in the US forum too. This is more local of an issue so great spot.

I’ve gotten as much of this project done as possible. As I mentioned earlier, there are parts I am not able to update due to me only being a level 3 editor. So if anyone level 4 or higher can help update the following segments, then we should be complete! I’ll post them here per the1who’s suggestion.

I’ll separate them by type of road the segment should be upgraded to, the level needed (if higher than level 4) and I will attach the link with the segments highlighted to make it simpler.

Thanks for all who can help!

Special: These should be upgraded by a Level 5 editor:

Martin Luther King Bridge: Should be upgraded to Major Highway:
Note: This might also need to be broken up into different segments - two segments for the St. Louis, Missouri portion, and two segments for the East St. Louis, Illinois portion.

Note: I have only highlighted the Eads Bridge itself and the immediate connecting roads. Should the roads further afield on the Illinois (eastern) side that connect from I-55/I-64 also be upgraded to Minor Highway or should they remain as Primary Street? (I’m referring specifically to 3rd St, E Broadway, Riverpark Dr, S Main St, and Barack Obama Ave.) I could not find a set of maps from Illinois similar to the Missouri ones, but based on the logic that these roads are used to connect drivers to an alternate bridge crossing, they should probably be Minor Highways too. I will leave that up for discussion.

Thanks again to all who can help!

I just went through each link and updated per your request and FC guidance. As far as the last one, I just updated it to mH to make it more with continuity. Someone may come slap my hand but with the ramps and such, I think it will serve just fine as is.
