Lately I’m been losing confidence in how much agreement there is on naming major routes. This morning I went up to Rochester (NY) and back and that just made it worse, particularly with badging. For example: I-90 got no badging at all :-(. I-490 seemed to get badging where it was “I- 490” but not where it was I-490, although I’m not sure. SR-96 was variously named SR-96, State Hwy 96, and something street with State Hwy 96 as an alt name, and seemed to only get badging as State Hwy 96.
There are segments in Texas on various interstates that have “I-xx” generating shields and “I- xx” not generating shields, so I think it’s still being worked on. As far as naming roads, if a highway has a local name (US-61 is Airline Highway from New Orleans to Baton Rouge) it should be labeled as such, which brings up a good question. If US-61 is the alternate name for a street, should that generate a shield?)
Shielding is a disaster right now. There is no rhyme or reason to which roads get shields (and we’ve sent examples to Waze to try to get it sorted out). Don’t do work focused on getting shields right now.
I grew up in NY, and everything was called “Route ##”, it didn’t matter if it was a US Route, State Route or County Route…
OK I’ll lean toward I-xx. Once that’s settled we’ll get a mass fix.
I strongly think so. The map would look great: up close it would say the local name in purple, and a little farther out it would have a shield. The driver would have verification two different ways.
and where do you come down on “SR-xx” vs “State Hwy xx” (on the main road, not ramps)? Is the Road Naming wiki page considered authoritative? Or rather, is it considered authoritative by a majority?
I have a biased opinion on this matter. Texas calls and labels State Highways as such: “SH” or “State Hwy” so being here in Texas, that’s what I’m sticking to.
I’d like to add that there is a push to try to get Waze to support things like NY-## which would display on the client as “NY-##”, but TTS would say “Route ##” for NY, but “TX-##” would become “Highway ##” in TTS.
“US-##” would always say “You Ess ##” nation wide (so the state field doesn’t have to be parsed at all).
“State Route” is preferred over “State Highway” by New Yorkers pretty much everywhere that I’ve been in the state. The decision to go with “SR-##” rather than “State Hwy ##” was primarily to reflect this preference, and go with the option that took up the least real estate on the screen while still having the TTS call them out as “State Route ##”. The ones that you see that are still “State Hwy ##” are named that way because that’s how they came in from the basemap import, and they haven’t been worked over thoroughly by someone following the current NY guidelines since the change to “SR-##”.
Personally, I would love to be able to use “NY-##” as the name and still hear “State Route ##” on the TTS, and if Waze ever does decide to act on that increasingly popular request, I’ll be among the first to push for the switch to “NY-##”. Until then, however, “SR-##” best represents the best compromise between popular usage and the need to conserve space on the screen. :?
The naming of state roads varies from state to state, and I would imagine we would respect each state’s standard rather than trying to force a national standard that, frankly doesn’t exist - but at the same time, be consistent within each state. I live in New Jersey, but having a weekend house in southeast NY as long as I can remember, I’ve gotten pretty familiar with New York’s road-naming cultures as well. New York and New Jersey both colloquially refer to all numbered roads as “routes.” Many other states do as well. Still others refer to such roads with the state’s abbreviation as a prefix to the number.
I think in New York some editors have changed some of the state roads to, say, State Hwy 52, because at one time it appeared that such a name would generate a round state road shield on the map. It’s now apparently known that that’s not the case, and I would imagine those should be changed back to State Rte 52, for example - or the shorthand SR-52 if there is statewide consensus.
The “State Hwy” name came from the basemap in many places.
I would also encourage no change on naming for the time being as whatever happens with shields, changes are going to have to be made in many places, it makes much more sense to just make the change once.
