Today I noticed that in the app, the acronym HOV (High-Occupancy Vehicle) was translated as “alta ocupação”.
Literally, it would be VAO (Veículo de Alta Ocupação), but this acronym is not popular in Brazil.
This inspired me to raise a topic that has always bothered me:
The acronym HEC (Horário Estimado de Chegada) as a translation of ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).
Basis for the request:
It is a very frequent expression in the app, but one that is not popular in Brazil.
I imagine that the vast majority of users have no idea what it means.
A few days ago, a frequent Waze user commented that they had finally discovered what HEC was… because before they couldn’t even imagine.
Difficulties involved:
Yes, I know there is a space limitation issue.
Yes, I know there is an issue with different contexts.
Yes, I know that the word “tempo” (time) has more than one meaning, especially when used in conjunction with “previsão” (forecast).
But let’s try to separate the use cases according to the contexts.
Existing contexts:
1st group: comparative
Description: indication of time, in a generic or comparative way, without mentioning an arrival time.
Proposal for the 1st group:
The word “tempo” (time), although imperfect, would be more understandable than “HEC”.
Exemplos:
a) “Similar ETA” = “HEC parecido”
b) “Similar ETA on alt. route” = “HEC parecido em rota alternativa”
c) “This route’s ETA is similar to %s” = “O HEC desta rota é similar a %s”
d) “This route’s ETA is similar to alternate routes” = “O HEC desta rota é similar ao das rotas alternativas”
e) “Due to new traffic information, ETA is longer by” = “Devido a nova informação do trânsito, o HEC aumentou em”
f) “Due to change in traffic conditions ETA was updated” = “Devido a mudança das condições do trânsito o HEC foi atualizado”

Description: indication of the estimated arrival time
Proposal for the 2nd group:
The phrase “hora de chegada” (arrival time) can fit in the limited space, as long as the character count of the full expression is adjusted.

a) “Your ETA” = “Seu HEC” => “Hora de Chegada”
b) “Waiting for ETA” = “Aguardando HEC” => “Calculando Hora de Chegada”
c) “Check your ETA” = “Verifique seu HEC” => “Ver Hora de Chegada”
d) “Personalize your ETA” = “Personalize seu HEC” => “Ajustar Hora de Chegada”
Note: In some cases, the context will need to be better evaluated.
e) “Send ETA” = “Enviar HEC”
f) “Send your ETA by text message:” = “Envie sua HEC por SMS:”
g) “Send ETA updates” = “Enviar atualizações do HEC”
h) “Send destination & ETA” = “Enviar destino e HEC”

Handle individually, as the long phrase allows more flexibility to adjust the complete expression without increasing total size.

a) “Share your destination, ETA and route at the start of each drive.” = “Compartilhe seu destino, HEC e rota no começo de cada percurso.”
b) “Choose people to easily send ETA updates” = “Escolha as pessoas para facilmente enviar atualizações do HEC”
c) “Send your ETA to let others know you’re on the way!” = “Envie seu HEC para que os outros saibam que você está a caminho!”
d) “Friends driving to the same place can see your ETA and you can see theirs” = “Amigos dirigindo para o mesmo local podem ver seu HEC e você pode ver o deles”
e) “Let others track your location in real-time. When in navigation, they’ll see your route and ETA too.” = “Permita que outros rastreiem sua localização em ‘real-time’. Quando estiver navegando, eles verão sua rota e o HEC também.”
