When visiting Los Angeles, Waze prompted me to use the HOV lanes; however, Waze does not take into account that the HOV lanes are metered. It neither understands them as a “toll road” nor that I do not have permission - i.e. I don’t have a CA FasTrak - and I could incur a ticket possibly for using such lanes.
While I encountered this in LA myself, this issue would apply to any area where there is a charge for using HOV. The app needs to know what electronic toll-collection system the driver owns before making road suggestions. Further, the knowledge of the possession said device would alter drive times, and possibly routes, overall.
What you are describing are not HOV lanes, they are HOT lanes. High Occupancy Toll lanes, more commonly referred to as Express Lanes. They are all designated as toll lanes, and Waze will not route you onto them if you go into your navigation settings and tell Waze to avoid toll lanes.
EDIT: Please note you need to make this setting before Waze calculates your route.
There is current work underway to finally bring the HOV/HOT/Toll lanes to the client interface for routing. It has been in the editor and infrastructure for a while now. That coming feature will address this directly.
