How can I get directions to not go through Atlanta?

I’m driving from Florida to NW TN. How do I get directions to go around Atlanta?

You have a couple of options that I can recommend. Pick a destination outside of Atlanta you would like to drive to first then your final destination.

Or in settings under navigation you can select the avoid freeway option and then plan a trip and see what routes waze will have you use. It still might have you use US or SR roads around metro Atlanta.

Which is going to be slower due to all the traffic lights and maybe even stop signs signs while you might avoid Atlanta you might increase your drive time by 50%.

I would add as someone who frequently drives from the airport to NW GA, sometimes the trip through Atlanta can be much faster depending on time of day and HOV status. If you have a Sun Pass, check if it will work on the I-75N express lane. My Peach Pass works in FL, so yours might work here. If your timing is right, the I-75N express lane is almost always worth it in my opinion. Even if the traffic is only moderate, you can avoid the whole “8 lanes slowly work their way down to 2” mess and pop out N of where the I-75 traffic usually thins out. Info on the corridor with a schedule of directional operation can be found here.

If you’re in a camper or some other vehicle that would seem cumbersome inside the city, I-285 on the west side is a great alternative to going downtown. I used to drive a 36’ Class A RV through there and had no trouble on 285.

YMMV. If you haven’t made the trip yet and have more questions, please let the community know.
