It is seriously irritating

Good luck with that. There’s a Level 4 editor that we’re all familiar with who does this constantly, but doesn’t respond to any attempts at contact by PM or by following up on the UR thread.

Yeah other points to note from the wiki that ituajr linked:

And as said in the wiki, you then take it up with the regional coordinator. For us here in Australia, it would be the area manager or relevant person for that area. Or a person who is a level 5 or 6 editor and is responsible for that area and refer to the wiki link.

I’ve never seen a “closed by reporter”, but does that change anything? Even if the original reporter were to close it, surely there’s a courtesy to make a comment to say “hey there, I’m the original reporter” or something similar. And it still doesn’t explain the problem with not replying.

No I dont think it is says Closed by reporter. I am pretty sure you can always see who closed it.

gimme a PM with details on the culprit…I might have a way to fire a warning shot at his editors level to get his attention and cooperation…

Welcome back stevethompson49. It is an ongoing problem. I have just given up. Every time I try to PM the person involved, there’s either no answer, or the person hasn’t created a forum profile so can’t receive a PM. It’s usually a junior editor who then disappears after a few weeks. There’s one guy who has PM’d me to let me know he’s just cleaning up the vast number of URs in Sydney as a courtesy PM & was going to do exactly as you say, but this is absolutely fine because Sydney is swamped at the moment.

That’s annoying. Let me know if I’m one of them. I just got thinking. Because I use a UR filtering script (URComments) to reduce the number of URs that I see, it’s quite possible that I’m not seeing other URs that you or others may be working on. I have the filter set to hide “URs with comments from anyone unless there’s no activity for > 7 days”. That means I shouldn’t see your URs or try to do anything about them unless you abandon them. However, if the UR is reported twice & you respond to only one (perhaps the 2nd report comes in after you start), then I won’t see the the fact that you’ve already started on the 1st report & I will fix up the 2nd report.

Oh, okay. I see the problem. That editor is a repeat offender.

Steve,
I cant solve your problem with the other editor but I dont think adding the street numbers will solve the problem here. You need to go to Google maps and move their pin closer to the desired road.

Sometimes they (like me) may not notice. If there are a lot of reports and I am doing it fast (and sometimes multiple at once) I might simultaneously edit something without even noticing. Sometimes the “Live Users” option turns off by itself so I don’t see the other user nearby. There could be reasons. There is so much to do the optimist in me says that no-one wants to duplicate effort?

If you think the intrusions are deliberate then I would pm glomp.

Best bet is to PM the editor in question, whilst copying in glomp and Caradellino. If it keeps happening, then they will be able to work with HQ to clamp down on the behaviour of the other editors who do not follow etiquette.

…what has been done

Here we have the example Steve provided, in this case not a Senior editor breaking the Wiki but an L1:CondelPark.jpg
Note that, as I’ve done, you can still send messages on closed UR, this giving you another method of reaching out to the guys closing UR you are working on.

Futher to this, please don’t make it a habit to keep making numerous non related comments in a closed UR as it sets a bad example to the user who reported the map issue in the first place.

It looks unprofessional and makes out that the volunteer editors do not know what is going on or how to do things.

And if any UR requires further comments, other than in direct relation to the map issue at hand, please open up a new thread so that the discussion can be carried out there and not in the report a user has submitted.

Could you please clarify “open up a new thread”? Do you mean PM or forum thread? I’ve tried using PM in the past. Many junior editors have no “forum profile” (can’t remember the term used) & therefore you can’t send a PM. Some more senior editors just ignore PMs (rp…), even though the Control Panel shows that the PM has been read.

Create a new thread either in the Update/Unlock section or in your relevent state section of the forum. That way if the UR requires a lot of information or discussion, then there is a record of what was done to rectify the issue and leaves only UR related comments in the UR the user has reported.

I have seen UR’s with 30 or more comments, going back and forward between editors, commenting about things in the forum and editing related problems and not dealing with getting the appropriate information to help solve the UR for the user.

If you are finding a junior editor with no forum profile, send us a PM and we can get one created for them.

If you are having issues with senior editors not responding to your PM’s then you can CC either Caradellino or myself and we can then look into it further.

I hope that editors are able to solve these issues between themselves, before having to escalate it further.

It may pay for everyone to re-read the guidelines for what is involved in being an Area Manager, which most of the senior editors are in one form or another.

Remember we are all volunteers and this is a community, where we can share and help each other. Helping to edit the map for users who, the majority, are not map editors.

It happens to me twice within one week. Same user. No comment, no response to PM, just close the UR I have been following.

So, just to clarify, the rules do allow taking over “abandoned” URs, or URs that haven’t been touched for 7 days. Are we all in agreement on this?

If it makes any of you feel any better, the same thing happens to me as well, where a junior editor closes out UR’s I have started the inital converstion with the user. And none were more than four days old after the first comment and one was only two days old with an on going conversation. :?

Waze will not limit new editors. It is aware of the risk this poses but they would rather that happen and there is another new map editor helping out.

We all start out the same when editing the map. However it is a lot easier today to reach out and help new editors than when I first started editing. Back then most editors edited individually and were only concerned about themselves. I have read about map wars that apparently that happened over here, so editors were not editing in any community spirit.

Today we have much better tools for editing and means of communicating with each other. Chat now allows everyone to ask question of each other and help each other out in real time. However there are still editors that choose not to join chat, who edit alone and do not participate in the community aspect of editing. These editors need to take a hard look at themselves and what message they are sending. They also need to think what they are trying to achieve when they are editing, when not editing in an community environment.

All these things are noticed, especially by me so I know who plays by the guidelines and who choose not to.
