L3 Unlock - London Colney

Hi there, most of the carpark outside London Colney’s shopping centre is locked at level 3. I am frequently in the carpark, and trying to sort it out because the one ways are all messed up. Can somebody help with this please.

Hi Tom, since this is your first post, welcome to Waze editing and the forums!

It’s best to include a “permalink”, I think this is the car park you mean? link. I’ve unlocked it; no idea why a car park should be locked in the first place (unless the aerials are out of date, which doesn’t seem to be the case here).

Have you seen the guide to editing at https://www.waze.com/wiki/UK_Quickstart? Far too much to absorb in one go, I know! You might be particularly interested in the advice on mapping car parks.

The lanes you’ve added are mostly still shown in red on the Editor, which means they aren’t finished yet. If keeping them, you need to select them again, click the “edit” button and fill in the “street” and “city” names, or click the “none” boxes. Then (and this is the bit I keep forgetting) click “apply” before saving. You also need to set the road type and turn restrictions (red/green arrows). Shift-Z is great for identifying blocked turns (but don’t forget that some may be validly blocked).

Happy editing! Any questions, just ask. You are welcome to send me a PM, but you’ll probably get a quicker answer by posting on the main UK forum https://www.waze.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=55.

Could well be because Tim’s advice in the car park thread was to lock outer car park lanes at L3 to stop all the inner lanes being added, as here.

So Dave, Please explain to me the issue with having the carpark mapped out?

Full details can be found in the UK Wiki here under the Parking Roads sub-heading.

One of the main points is GPS just isn’t accurate enough to determine which lane you’re in if all the lanes are mapped. You might only be a lane out, but if it’s one way as a lot of supermarkets are, Waze will generate automated map problems if it thinks you’re driving the wrong way.
Another reason, to a lesser extent, is that it just clutters up the map, especially when viewed on your phone.

…and there’s no real need to have turn-by-turn GPS navigation in to or out of a car park. Better that the drivers figure that out for themselves.

So I noticed that the whole car park has now been mapped, which seems to go against what you said to me?

If you look carefully you should notice that the new editor has not been able to attach the new car park lanes to the existing roads because, as explained above, they are locked at level 3.

Obviously we are not able to prevent new editors adding roads to the map BUT we can, by careful use of the lock levels try to prevent them messing up the map.

As you have spotted this the best course of action would be to send the new editor a PM to pass on some of your experience, explain to them the reasons why we don’t map every car park lane, direct them to the UK Wiki, maybe point them to this thread, we all learn from each other. However if they don’t respond within a reasonable time then delete all the unnecessary roads, they are pretty easy to spot as they are highlighted in red; a sure sign of a new user and it allows you to follow them around the map.
