Can a L4+ give me some advice and possibly a downlock to L3 to solve a UR here.
My thoughts on the solution are either:
#1 Disallow the right turn from the PR exit to the PFS. A reason not to use this though is that the U-turn will not be allowed to double back on yourself to go eastbound on Cherwell Drive.
#2 Probably the right option. While the middle raised area isn’t massively wide, this is a complex junction and the PFS can only be accessed from the westbound direction. Split the carriageway and make it into two one-way carriageways like a short section of dual carriageway. Obviously I’ll achieve this by splitting the current segment and rejoining so that the speed data remains on the segments.
The best GSV image I can find to illustrate the current layout is this one, which shows the raised central reservation just before completion of the junciton remodelling in 2019.
If option #2 is the preferred, can I please have these segments down to a L3 to put it into place?
I think option 2 is introducing too much complexity for too little benefit. There’s no clear separation between the GPS tracks in either direction, so that’s not a reason for splitting.
I would first make the PLR in the petrol station one way. Then forbid the outbound right turn and the inbound right turn as well. The old GSV that shows the roundabouts also shows the thin central reservation, so those turns shouldn’t have been allowed in the first place!
I’ve downlocked some segments in case you need it for the turn permissions. Let me know when you’re done.
Absolutely see you point of view. These changes have been made, as well as disallowing the right turn into the PFS from the main road in the A to B direction.
My only concern though, is for those exiting the PFS and wishing to travel SE along the B4495 or SW along the B4150. With this setup, there will be no way of them being given the u-turn at the traffic lights and they may well be taken on a big detour.
I obviously won’t be able to see what routes are offered on Route Speeds until the changes have been pushed to the live map, however can see massive detours being caused, so would welcome any thoughts.
I wouldn’t be offering Waze users a u-turn anyway.
The GSV isn’t up-to-date enough to show the finished traffic lights, so we don’t know if there will be no-u-turn signs there, but it’s generally not a good idea to offer u-turns at lights unless the roads are very wide.
Note that under the old road layout, the roundabouts were painted mini-roundabouts; so they should have been mapped in Waze as under 20m diameter to prevent u-turns, as advised by the Highway Code. People are only going to get a detour if they’re heading through here in one direction and specifically choose that petrol station. In which case the “time off route” in the app will warn them of any significant diversion.
