The ferry route from Sorrento to Queenscliff is identified as “Major highway”. This is confusing when driving the area and may lead to improper driver directions.
It seems more appropriate to identify that segment as “Ferry”

The ferry route is currently set as a major highway for routing purposes.
The ferry route has both toll and time restrictions set.
You will only get routed onto this if it is between the operating times and you don’t have the “Avoid toll roads” option.
Waze are still working out the details about how “ferry” roads will work for both the editor and in the client.

I’m the last person to make the editing changes to the Sorrento Queenscliff Ferry and I had mapped it according to the Waze Wiki page on the topic: http://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Ferries

The ferry also meets the criteria for addition to Waze as part of the road network. The following is a list of what a ferry must not have for it to be added to Waze:

  • Passenger ferries without vehicles - It takes vehicles and foot passengers.
  • Ferries requiring pre-booking - You can drive straight up to the ticket booth, get a ticket and get in the queue to board.
  • Private ferries unavailable to the general public - Anyone willing to pay is able to use it.
  • Ferries over two hours in duration - It’s a 40-minute one way trip.

If a Wazer was on the Mornington Peninsula, lets say in Rosebud, and wanted to go to Geelong. To take the ferry would result in around a 50% travel time saving instead of driving around the Port Phillip Bay through Melbourne. Plus there is a time restriction on the ferry route, so the route won’t be available when it’s not operating. Also there is a toll restriction too so anyone wanting “toll free” travel won’t get the ferry as an option.

Until Waze implements a separate function for ferries in the app, this is best practice.
