With the roadworks on the above section almost coming to an end (yay), the new speed cameras attached to the variable speed limits have been installed.
These are of the new HADECS type cameras which, unlike current cameras on the stretch prior to J11 North (and after J11 south), are not mounted on the gantry above each lane, HADECS have the ability to monitor several lanes of traffic by using just one camera.
As I work on the motorway, I’ve taken the opportunity to add these on Waze (I’ve missed a northbound one, but will add when passing later). Whilst these cameras are not yet active, and the current average speed cameras for the roadworks are still present, I fear they may be marked as ‘not there’. Although these cameras are not hidden, they are not as obvious as current technology in use on that stretch of road, and they are painted grey and are mounted (in this case), on the left side of the carriageway behind the armco.
If I see them disappear, I’ll re-add them as necessary.
They use the same on the M25 and M1. At one site on the M25 they have the Camera’s above the lanes and the one of the far left. What I want to know is do they work when there is no speed shown on the gantries? [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
hublander: I believe (according to one of the last things mr clarkson got to say on top gear) that these cameras can be switched off and on remotely. Therefore even if there is no traffic management in place (traffic running smoothly and no likelyhood of congestion etc) the cameras can be switched on to catch speeding offenders travelling above 70 mph.
Revenue stream comes to mind. Ball ache is another thing that comes to mind!!
Hi nemaaa,
Thank you very much for adding these, however, could I please just make a request that we don’t have them “live” on the map just yet. As I understand it these cameras are not yet “live” and I would rather we just map the average cameras for this area just for now. I think you are correct in saying people will hit the “not there” button and it may just be worth waiting until they are live to add them to the map.
I’d agree with having them live on the map, even if they aren’t active. As a driver I’d rather get the alert than poo myself noticing the camera at the last minute (of course doing just under than the legal speed limit!).
The HADECS do work even when there is no limit displayed on the gantries! In that case they’re likely to be set to >80mph though.
Soooo, do I post them, or not? lol, and without going too much into my background, it’s on good authority that the HADECS on this stretch will only be active when ATM (Active Traffic Managament( is in use, similar to the rest of the ATM controlled zones on the west mids / staffs area of the motorway.
Obviously though, that information could be completely wrong, but I’ll find out soon enough when they’re live.
