This has been bouncing around the chat for the past few days, so wanted to release this into the community for thoughts. I think we have scope to combine a few map issues that I believe are across our many areas - Apologies if this is âday to dayâ edits that should be done - Just a suggestion for a community event!
Suggestion : Overhaul on Places.
Refresh the Ad Campaigns, review the âstoresâ and locations that have been used (B&Q / McDonaldâs / Tesco), this is to correct all the places back to the UK Guideline standards. This can also be an opportunity for us to find additional stores and complete any missing details (obviously taking into considerations copyright concerns).
GDPR Concerns - One thing I really wish to highlight to the community is the images that have been uploaded to places, if we follow the guidance of No people/Reg plates, I think there is a tonne across England that we really should remove from the system. The risk of this is we delete quite a lot of data. The other option to removal is the use of software (such as faststone capture) and blur out any reg plates/faces and reupload thus removing any concerns.
These three suggestions are a bit heavy so any feedback would be much appreciated
Ad Campaigns
I think reviewing places previously subjected to ad campaigns could be beneficial. Some editors (myself included) are still finding rogue ones according to recent posts Iâve come across. Weâd probably need the help of the champs/admins to get hold of a list of businesses affected by previous campaigns that we can work through. This could be done quite simply by creating a Google Sheets spreadsheet and giving the raiders edit access so we can mark them off as we go.
Residential Places
This is potentially something that may be useful, however weâd need to find a methodical way to work through these. At the moment I just fix them as I come across them.
Photos
This one will be awkward in my opinion. For a start we canât (re-)upload pictures within WME, so weâd either need to just delete them, or use âalternative methodsâ to be at the location and re-upload it after âfixingâ. Thatâs potentially hours of work for just one town - multiply that out across the country and weâll need a lot of helpers!
Also, I know that Google/Wazeâs advice for photos say not to upload any that contain faces or number plates, however Iâm guessing this is just because of laws in other countries around commercial use. In the UK, any photo taken in a public place (where youâre deemed to have no right to privacy such as a public street) can be freely used without permission or attribution. GDPR compliance just requires that the company using it has the ability to remove it upon request from the identifiable subject. Maybe some confirmation would be good before potentially deleting hundreds/thousands of place photos.
Photos - one of the first things I was told when I started editing was that any photo submitted for, or currently attached to, a place shouldnât contain a visible car reg. plate or a potentially identifiable face. Personally Iâve always adopted a policy of rejecting any submitted photos which fall within these criteria, and deleting any existing ones I come across which do so.
Yeah, donât get me wrong⌠I still follow the guidelines and reject anything with a person or a car. Was just interested in the reason that exists in the first place really.
Fully agree but also, GDPR guidance is that people should know what data is held of them and faces counts as personal
data. Iâm not 100% on social media but it is a reason why Google had to blur faces. Iâve always declined but Iâve just come across lots. My suggestion is we lump all these together and do areas of the UK im sure with the right planning and stuff should be good!
Residential - I donât see many residential as public places, maybe one or two a week. If Iâm approving PURs iâll normally accept it if it has a full address, then change it to residential after saving.
The problem is the address restrictions on Residential places. They must have a house number and that number must conform to â123456abcdâ. You canât have house names, which is why they have Other category.
Photos - I delete any photos that are poor quality, taken in the dark/rain, dashboards, car full frame or selfies.
If the photo has a good clear image of the place Iâll leave it, even it it has a few people in the distance or itâs across a car park. It would be impossible to get a photo in the High Street or Retail Park that doesnât include some people or cars.
Remember that the New Place PUR panel doesnât show all the details the user entered. Donât reject it just because it has a bad photo, sometimes itâs better to accept it then delete the photo after saving.
Place Interface Enhancements (PIE) script has a Photo Viewer that will show the photos of all the places on-screen, very quick for reviewing.
