Mentoring

Up to now new editors have usually been left alone to find their own way in the world of Waze, only getting contact from others if they do something that brings them to someones attention.
While there is a lot of information in the Wazeopedia, working your way through it while also trying to put it into practise is not always as easy as intended.

However, help is now at hand. As some of you may already know, Waze has been trialling a Mentoring scheme to help and encourage new editors. This has now been rolled out for general use and I have just been accepted as a mentor.

I am not yet clear exactly how this will work, but the basics are, if a new editor (4 weeks or less!) wants a mentor who will be the point of contact, answer questions, check over some editing, advise on how to do something, etc. etc. then they let me know and I will send them an invite to become a mentee. Once this is accepted it should set up a communication route between us and enable easy and quick contact. Once I have a couple of mentees and we have worked it for a while I will share more information about how it works here.

So, are you a new(ish) editor who has done enough to decide they would like to keep with it and would like some help to progress up the learning ladder? If so either reply here or drop me a PM and between us we can see how this can work.

One point, as I will be learning how to do this as we go along, I will have to limit the number of mentees, so please don’t get put off if I can’t take you on straight away. I (or another Mentor when we get them) will come back for you as soon as possible.

Happy editing. :sunglasses:

And if any of the more experienced editors would like to become a mentor, get in touch with me.

:ugeek:

Happy to be considered.

Have managed to get to L2, but always looking to learn and a ā€œdirect lineā€ to a subject matter expert seems a great opportunity to learn and improve.

Hi Ian, and welcome.
As you are already at L2 you are not on my list of new editors to select from and invite. I think you will have to complete and submit the form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSer6rG96MyUSh0boOwhMkeip6TYvMYoe1IaNH7WjlXYaUuKMg/viewform to get added to the process. Please try that and we will see what happens.

EDIT This form does not work!! If you want to be mentored but have been editing for over 4 weeks, this will have to be done outside the current system. Please let me know and I will add you to the new mentoring forum and we can go from there.

Hi Ian,

Just seen the mentee request, thank you.

What would this programme entail? Sounds like I’d be up for it.

I found a new editor in my area today (I was attracted like a moth to the bright red, un-named roads…)
Should we still send them a Welcome message, guiding them to the Wazopedia and forum, or will the Mentor scheme pick them up now?
Is there also a Mentor Request link we could give them?

Jon

The link to apply is below in my first post, but so far nothing has come to me through despite at least one request I am aware of. If they have only started in the last 4 weeks, I can select them from a list of new editors, but this is very long, over 100 names, so I only want to select those who express an interest in being mentored.

EDIT The form does not work. Please send any prospective mentee a PM asking them to contact me if they are interested.

 Hi All
New to Waze and keen to get as much help as possible as we have the broadcast version as we run a community radio station in West Cornwall.
Is there any way of identifying the handles of Waze users as would be good to give them a shout out.
Dave

We editors don’t really get to see what the partners get information wise. Assuming you are refering to which wazer makes a hazard report, if you are able to select the report the wazer handle should be included, but may be Anonymous.

Hello! I’m new’ish to Waze editing, still learning as ever so I’m always open for some advice

Hi there. As you have been a registered editor since 2017 you can not be added the the ā€œofficialā€ mentoring list (a current Waze irritation, only a new (within the last 4 weeks) editor can be added to the mentoring system), but as we have discovered, apart from it being visible that you are a ā€œmenteeā€ there is currently no other benefit so do not worry.

I will get you added to the forum mentoring group where you can see the simple introductory presentation and from there feel free to ask any questions, either in the mentoring forum, in the main forum or via a PM

Ian,
Have sent a PM but will publish my existence in open forum and accept the invitation to join the mentoring programme.
The introductory presentation is excellent, thanks for that work.
Regards,
John

Hi John and thanks for posting. The Waze mentoring scheme is still very basic and I do not see if someone accepts my invitation to join after I have sent it. Glad you liked the presentation, hopefully it explained some of the basics. Any questions, please ask in the mentoring forum.
Ian

Hi. Fairly new editor here - only been getting into it for the last couple of weeks or so - but have been registered as a user for much longer than that, so I guess I fall outside the ā€˜4 weeks’ cut-off? Would be happy to be assigned an editing mentor/guru if that’s possible, though! Have had a couple of head-scratching moments (ultimately resolved) so far…

Hi and Welcome. I have added you to the mentoring and so you should now have access to the mentoring forum.
https://www.waze.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1992
In here are some presentations which may help. Any specific questions, please ask away in the mentoring section and I will answer (or find an answer if I don’t know).

Currently I am the only actual Mentor and there are around 15 mentees most in the ā€œschemeā€ but a few like you that have been registered too long for me to add through the official route.

Ian

Thanks Ian. Looking forward to contributing.

If it is possible I would quite like to have access to mentoring please.

Hi. I have send you a PM. Welcome to the mentoring group.

Would definitely also be grateful for some mentoring advice - again, i fall into the old, but new category.

Hi and thanks for contacting us about the mentoring. I will send you a PM with the details.
Ian
