Hi and Welcome

This is a new forum area for those who are mentoring and the mentees to discuss anything related to training and learning the skills to progress as Waze Map Editors.

Please feel free to ask questions and if I can’t answer them I am sure I can find someone who can.

Just added a few more new editors to the mentoring. Please use this forum to raise questions and ask for help. The more it gets used the better it will be.

Hi there, have received your message via the editor. Happy to take some mentoring, looking forward to getting more involved!

I have tried to add a supermarket that has newly opened today, I have driven the access road and this has been mapped on today’s drive, but it won’t let me insert the new road as I think the new junction leaves a road that can only be edited by level 4. I have previously tried to locate the new supermarket too but this edit is pending, I have actually got its location slightly wrong anyway but it won’t let me edit that either! Can you advise a way forward?

Thanks for reaching out, cheers.
Gareth

Hi Gareth,
The first lesson is that every question really needs a link so that I can find where you are referring too. Which is a good point, as I completely forgot to put that in my introductory presentation.
Find the road you are talking about, highlight it on Zoom 4 or bigger, then “Right Click” over the small chain link icon on the bottom right of the screen, this copies a link of the location. Then paste that into your message.

Now the question - If you drive (pave) a new road Waze should let you edit it, but there are some strange restrictions on what a new editor can do, so that might be the problem in editing it. You are correct, you can not add anything to a road higher that you level, so you will need to post in the editors request forum asking for someone to either unlock the road so you can connect it, or for something simple like this, for them just to connect it.

Finally on the place, I don’t know why this is a problem until I see it. I have found and approved many of your added places, but maybe not found this one yet. Until it is approved, it does not “really” exist and so it can not be changed.

Ian

Just want to say thanks for the add, finding my way around  Starting to make some small edits around where I live, a new build estate and the roads have been wrong for 5 years, finally corrected yay!

Hi Tinbum1973, welcome to editing. Feels good getting something changed that has been missing or incorrect for a while doesn’t it. Even more so when it shows on the client app and you know it works.

The presentations that are available from here are a great read if you haven’t already done so and things start to make more sense the more you do. When I first had a look at editing I didn’t have the time so just decided not to start. That was a few years ago. Now looking at the forums and the mentoring made it so much more appealing. Enjoy

Hi Ian
Yes I am happy to receive some mentoring.
I recently changed some speed limits in the village of Hendre but could only change the two short central ones. The limited zone extends further but when I highlight the next section it extends far out of the village. How do I split the long road section into 2 smaller parts?

John C.

Which Hendre, Ian? The one in Flintshire, by any chance?
(Edit: actually, I can see that you’ve made some unlock requests in Monmouthshire, so I guess it’s that Hendre and not the one up by me!)

Hi Ian and everyone,

I get on here when I get a break between lessons (I am a driving instructor hence my desire to give back and help to keep waze improving).

Ask Ian replied and said I have been an editor for a fair while but am still down at level one having not found too many things to edit (and it seems some things don’t count?) My question is really what counts as an edit towards your total for the next level? Is it physically adding something to the map? or is it also changing something? Do things like house numbers count as an edit? Or if there is a useful guide to what counts that would be great. 1 final question, do the edits count straight away or do they have to be approved by someone? Or is it when the new map upload happens each day?

What counts as an edit :?: Pretty much anything you change or add;

  • draw new segment
  • change details of a segment - name, direction, speed limit, turn arrows, road type, restrictions, closures (L3+), lock level, etc
  • add, change, remove house numbers
  • draw a new venue
  • change details of a venue - name, attributes, shape, lock level, etc
  • add, change, remove a Map Comment
  • and more…

But there are some quirks, change 10 segments and you’ll have made 10 edits, make another change to the same 10 segments within 24 hours and those edits won’t be counted, make 10 adjustments to the same segment (alignment, speed, road type) and it only counts as 1 edit. House numbers are the frustration, only 1 edit is recorded per segment regardless of the quantity of house numbers you may have to map.

Edits to segments don’t require any approval, they will be live in the app after the next tile update that covers the time period of the edit, usually 24-36 hours when the servers are behaving. Venue edits require your first edits / additions to be approved until you get +10 approved, after that your edits to venues don’t require approval and should be live in the app almost immediately. You can edit any venue regardless of its lock level but those locked above your level will still require approval. If you make an edit to a segment, and another editor immediately changes it back your edit will still be counted.

Finally reaching the next level obviously helps with you ability to edit more, as a self managed country we may promote editors who have shown good ability and interaction with the community before the global suggested number of edits.

I’d love some mentoring if that’s ok. I’m quite enjoying the process, but I do need some help with it. And I’ve already seen some of the answers I’ve been looking for in the text above. Nice to meet you all.

Invite to mentoring has been sent to you. Please review the information on the mentoring forum and then message me or post on the mentoring forum if you have any questions.

Thanks Ian, I saw the invite and I came here to say hello. I’ll have a look at the mentoring pages as well.

Hello, thanks for adding me to this forum section. It’s very informative.

Hi All,

I hope all you new editors are all finding what you need here. I do not seem to get many questions, so either it is fine, or it is not working and you are going away confused and not asking about it.

Anyway, the reason for the brief update it to let you know that we have just doubled the number of mentors in the UK, having gone from 1 to 2! So as not to confuse anyone, we are both called Ian and so any questions on anything training related, just ask Ian. You will (hopefully) get a reply from me (Ianinessex) or Ian (iangpowell)

Happy editing

We are on a roll now and have just added a third mentor covering the UK. So as not to get too boring, this time it is not an Ian.

I would like to welcome Craig (Craig24x7) to the job. Now we have enough members to form a team, hopefully we will be able to get together and update and add to the training material soon.

Hi all,

I have just received notification from Anat of my establishment as a Mentor but I think that still needs ratification by the UK coordinator - otherwise known as Ian. ( whom I notified on submitting my application).

I am still working through the various bits of documentation and past questions to try to establish a baseline of things to be sure I know before attempting to pontificate to others.

Any advice, via Chat, would be very welcome and (fairly) quickly responded to; I am retired so have time, apart from gardening demands from my wife, at most times of day. Age, however , means bedtime is rigidly set at 10:15 p.m. so any night owls will have to wait until the following morning.

My signature shows my area, so if that can be taken into consideration when communicating it would be nice, but I have offspring in various parts of the South who are Waze users (of course), so this may help with specifics.

Hi Roy, you have been approved and so welcome to the team. You should now have sight, via your profile page, of any new editors who have started within the last 30 days and you can message them asking if they want mentoring. Otherwise, we either wait for them to apply for mentoring via the application form, or pounce on them if they are caught in the act of doing something wrong.

Is this a daily, weekly or other update?

I am aware of edits, coincidentally in my MA, from 5 days ago (world_eas8nwwy) whom I messsaged informally and got a ‘Thank you’ in response; their name doesn’t appear anywhere that I have seen so far. I mentioned mentoring,

Having just looked, you do not yet appear to have the “Find More Mentees” button on your profile yet. I will chase to see when this will happen. When you click on this, a drop down will appear of the new editors. The one you mentioned above is in that list.
