Hi there.
NSW have introduced Mobile Phone cameras over the weekend. There have been 2 in place at Clunies Ross Overpass on the M4 and Anzac Pde at Moore Park.
Will these camera and other new ones have the ability to be reported by the community?
Will there be a new camera “type” added to the Waze database?
Thank you
I wonder if users will find ways to use other reporting features to add their locations??
With mobile speed cameras, Wazers were encouraged to use the “police” hazard. The same might be useful here, but as ituajr said, be strategic in your reporting
I’ve seen a couple of reports coming in as “General error”, “Missing bridge/overpass” and others.
“Police” hazards are supposed to be temporary and short-term. I wouldn’t encourage these for mobile phone cameras - both because reporting them accurately requires touching the phone, and there’s a risk of someone then pressing the “not there” button if they don’t see speed detection and then getting detected by the mobile phone camera. One might be able to argue that touching a mobile phone to use Waze for navigation purposes is legal, but I reckon using it to report a detection camera wouldn’t fly as an excuse. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, and I don’t play one on TV)
I’ve started identifying mobile phone cameras identified by users with a dummy camera and map comment.
Hi Scott,
I saw this. It has highlighted that the camera locations are changing much more frequently than I originally thought (weeks, not months). To keep the cameras up to date, we would need an ongoing project. This isn’t a good use of our volunteer resources when a) there is so much else that needs fixing on the map, and b) Waze doesn’t yet give us the tools required to map mobile phone detection cameras.
I recant my previous statement re using dummy cameras. They’re not helpful if the frequency is changing so much.
I’ll be waiting for Waze to give us the tools necessary to map other cameras before giving this much more attention.
