I need a software that can create the roads as I drive.
Here in the Pilbara in WA Australia, there are hundreds of roads around my worksite, they do have an “updated map” printed on paper that is totally useless.
Waze has a map editor for PC only and Google said they can send me a car to update the roads for me but I told them that without a permit they wont be able to drive on these roads anyway.
I cant play with my PC while I am driving, you would think Waze on Android would detect when you drive on a road that is not on their database right? It does not…
In a few weeks I will need to drive on these roads by myself and I’m terrified as I will look like a boof head if I get lost between sites.
If you know of an Android app that does this simple operation or if you know how to get Waze to do this, as in, update the database with the new route as it’s been driven, please let me know.
You can pave roads in the Waze app, then adjust them on the Waze Map Editor (WME). Inside of WME you can also see GPS data points from users that have driven the area.
Tap the orange report button>tap map issue>tap pave then start driving. Tap the paving icon after you finish. You can see the steps in the video below
I would recommend driving with the app running and then going back to your PC and using the “Drives” tab in the editor to add your roads based off the drives. While driving you can leave yourself URs (Map Issue in the app) with notes about the various roads, such as names, speed limits, etc.
lol, because there are offroad types and it would make things a bit more complicated. We’d probably have accidentally paved roads all over the place (including inside of lakes/oceans)
I will keep working on this process as it might become something really important in the future as it seems that we will have a big job building telecommunication towers in that type of context, so now is the time that I learn how to use this tool. It’s not very well made and I understand that it might be as good as it gets for the time being as we are a minuscule minority driving on “unpaved” roads all year round. So I will take the time to learn and to become efficient at doing this as I don’t wish to spend all my time drawing maps, as I prefer drinking beer on my spare time!
Here is the issue I had today after paving more roads, I just opened my editor, clicked on drives and the map is blank, my drives from yesterday are not showing anymore
“We can’t find any of your drives. Have you started driving with the Waze app yet? If so, please make sure you log in to the Waze Map Editor with the same username and password you use in the app.”
I am R3nZk1 as you may have guessed. LordVonZipstor is my other project and the user is Royal on Waze, using the user R3nZk1 for this project as it goes with my work.
Yup, have tried to add places on WME and no luck. Why this stupid restriction, I have been using waze for many years, am I wasting my time trying to help the local community that works in mines? we dont get to use satnav like CBD office workers ? Doomed to the old paper map? Mining is not considered as cool? Help me there
Some of the roads will be visible, the rest need a bit of work. You should have editing rights around there now, so load up your editor, and tidy things up a bit.
If you follow ituajr’s advice above it will help you a lot. I am also available to assist you with more direct help if you have specific problems. As always, feel free to join in on Discord where things are a little more 2 way rather than this forum.
Importantly - make sure the roads are set to Private, click “No name” and “Newman” in the name box, and set them to 2-way. I will work on getting the places you have added approved also.
I’m really caught up after field work most of the time as I am also trying to catch up on my other business and this whole editing thing seems a bit much for me realistically…
Would there be someone who is fast at editing that can work from my paving? Someone did just that apparently after I paved some roads a few weeks ago…! (or was it automated?)
Also, you guys should contact BHP with a rep as there are thousands of kilometers unpaved within their mine sites and I am sure they will like the Waze project, since the Google Map cars cannot enter without a special permit, they would for sure recommend Waze to all their workers so they can report hazards and it would help them avoiding to get lost travelling between sites, resulting in increase of productivity and safety. I’m serious.
If there are no roads on waze, workers here will not use waze or any navigation as all is provided is a paper map.
The only way to get this done is to contact BHP and tell them that waze is the solution to their site mapping headache, this way they will be able to advertise and ask volunteer workers to get into the project.
I could talk about it at prestart and tell all the workers in my project that this is happening and their help is welcome for paving the site however I am not sure if i’d get in trouble or not with BHP as I don’t know if I need a permission to “publish” the road network from inside their private area if you know what I mean.
I myself at this stage only staying on a restraint amount of roads that I use only a few times per day so I am not the best wazer around on site… But hey, thanks for editing my pave job, have you done some more since last time?
What it I want to ad some names on the map that you have been editing? How do I do that? I can fix up some bits and add road names, site names but cant do the full thing so you’ve got it?
What I will do I will talk to a BHP supervisor to see if they have a problem with BHP roads being published then will know if we have to keep this hush hush or if I can do an announcement at the project meeting.
I had a chat with a BHP representative today and she said that there is no problem at all with waze paving on a BHP site. She said that they use one called Avenza maps but its no way near as rich as waze in terms of functions.
So tomorrow i will present the project at prestart and there might be some other contractors that will start paving their own too.
Yes please go ahead with the editing if you can, i personally am not chazing points at all, i just want a good digital map that i can use for work!
Can you see the roads i have added? The ones in gray did appear there after i paved a few weeks ago so someone must have done something.
Are you going to be able to see the paving from other members?
