Naming of Parking Lot Roads

Just found a few parking lot roads in Laurel that had names like “22 Main St” and “1 2nd St.” I suspect a well-meaning editor meant to either have Wazers get directions to these places or identify which building each parking lot belongs to.

I checked “none” on the street name for these segments, but kept the street name data.

Is there some guidance for naming of parking lot roads? The wiki doesn’t seem to say anything about it, though the intro video for new editors says something to the effect of “you may want to enter a name for your parking lot road.” The only case where I’ve named parking lot roads (or kept names on them) is in the Shoppers’ parking lot in Westminster where there are actually posted street name signs on these roads (Jermor Lane, 140 Village Road, and Nursery Road).

My practice has been to only name parking lot roads when:

  1. The County maps list the road/alley/etc with a name
  2. The parking lot itself is named
CBenson could probably give better specific guidance about “service roads” that have associated addresses off a main street.

I name parking lot roads that have road signs (the Waugh Chapel Shopping Center is my example).

Waze has been very unhelpful with how to deal with service roads that have associated address off a main street, which is why the guidance can be rather vague. Currently there is no way to place a stop point on a location other than a segment that bears the addressed street name. Thus, if you label the parking lot road “22 Main St” and try to enter the address number as an address for “Main St” you can’t place the stop point on the parking lot road. There has never been consensus that such roads should be given the same name as the main road. But there has never been an alternative solution either.

I also do some unique things with private roads that have named addresses. Here’s my example:
This segment is a private road, but all its addresses are “dutton ave” (notice the tiny sign in the street view): PermaLink

I can’t really find much fault with that method. You get the possibly confusing turn instruction onto the private road that says “Take at _____ on Dutton Ave.” But you got the same instruction until very recently if you checked the no name box as well. At least this way the addresses are correct and the stop points are correct.

I looked for that shopping center and was brought to Waugh Chapel Road in Odenton and Crofton, outside my editing area. I couldn’t find it.

(removed silly question which I answered for myself)
