I wanted to open this up as I have talked to a few people in NV already but really want to standardize the LV area to start and maybe NV and west region.
Anyway, my main question is what do we want to do as a region? Use private roads for ALL/MOST neighborhoods, gate communities only, or what?
Private roads to be used like how we have the bases setup, with the one entrance setup briefly as private and the rest as street. I’d expect to see that for gated communities as well if we were to follow that example, as it has been said if someone has an address inside the gated community beyond the gate, it should still route just fine. But I have seen where people here in Vegas were routed all over and around the whole community, to the back side which was closer but never really ever navigating to the street to which they were to stop. That is the problem I see with integrating the private and street road types. I’d rather not see private roads for gated communities unless there is a way out the back side, meaning, only using the private road to prevent routing through the community when it will most likely be impossible.
I know the wiki said that’s one way to do it too. But that’s usually reserved for bigger “private” areas.
What I’ve seen, mostly in the SW here is the entire neighborhood is all private road, not just the entrance. And I think some may be gated but that’s not always the case. I guess the argument was that way it should never route through neighborhoods unless the destination is in there. I haven’t seen any problems here in Vegas with neighborhoods that use all “street” type roads. No map problems or user reports that seem related to the road type. I just wanted to make things uniform across the valley as I’ve been working on the newly constructed areas and have noticed this happening.
I hope I’m making sense. I think following the wiki and using “street” is the proper way. I just wanted to know if there was any evidence to support the full “private road” approach too before I changed anything.
I don’t know if this is worth anything or not, but I figured it’s worth considering.
A while back I had a conversation with Jemay (RC) on the subject of these types of residential situations. At that time, he told me that his preference was to use private road type if it’s one of those communities that are all just non-named roads (which admittedly are usually also gated) or when in a gated community. The thought was that by making them all private, even if there’s only one entrance now, if they add an additional entrance at a later time the community will already be set up to resist routing through it. as a result of that conversation, I painstakingly went through communities like this one and set all the roads to private road type.
Part of the criteria that he gave me was that if it was a public place such as an office complex or shopping, etc., to use PRL type, but if an semi-private place such as an apartment complex with roads to use PLR. This is one such example of where I did that (and before someone asks, I only added those roads because I had a UR from a resident there that wanted to have them in - otherwise I provably wouldn’t have bothered :)). (Added side note: When I zoom in all the way, it looks like there’s a gate at the entrance. I wasn’t aware of it when I did those roads or picked that as an example to show.)
I’m not suggesting that you change how you’re editing them; just giving some information on how I’ve been doing it and why - use it or ignore it as you wish.
I keep going back to the Private installations.
This would include the big private residences and gated communities. The first example that SuperDave gave was before we finalized the Private Installations wiki and he set it the way we had it back then. Now if he asked me about it today, I would recommend that only the one segment into the community set as private and the rest set as street or appropriate FC. BUT I would NOT go through and change all of it now… It is set and currently it works!
But for the majority of the trailer parks and inside a small block areas, then private all of them like the second example.
The current wiki was bantered around a lot and tested a lot so we know it works. One thing that we can not handle is a guest vs residence entrance(s), we are going to get complaints no matter what we do about those.
So I would read the wiki (which I did again) and if there is something that needs to be adjusted, please bring it up and we can discuss it! And if need be we can suggest changes to the wiki!
I reread the wiki and saw that making everything private wasn’t recommended anymore, and to use the 1 private segment at the gate entering in a gated community. I will follow this guideline going forward. I have a few communities that have new construction, and I think when I created the roads there I always default to Street, so I may have to go through and see which ones have mixed Street and Private Road and make them all the same for those.
ABC,
The Las Vegas Country Club has a side entrance for residents only, and a main entrance for everyone else. I made a small one way out segment at the side entrance to keep routing through the community. There are also exits out of some apartment communities that are truly exits only, but this Las Vegas Country club had a lot of route through issues despite the private roads. I haven’t seen any routing through issues here in a long while.
The Rhodes Ranch community is a private guard gated community that would get a lot of URs from residents coming from the east side and were routed around to the back entrance even though they lived inside the west side of the community. I changed the front and back entrance to private from primary road and left the rest of the community as streets. It seemed to solve the problem.
So I ran into a problem yesterday driving to a friends house. Waze routed me into the back entrance of the gated community, but there is no call box on that side. It’s strictly for residents. The whole neighborhood is(was) set to Private Road type. So I changed the back entrance to 2 one ways, and the entrance side is private, the exit is Street. And changed all of the streets in the community to Street. I’ll have to try again when I get home and see how it wants to route me, but I’m hoping this is the solution. Guest to the community should get routed to the proper gate, while residents will know there is a back entrance they can use. Let me know if I did this correctly, or if there’s a better way.
I took a look at what you did there, but I think you’re going to make more problems by doing that - by setting all of that as Street instead of Private, you’re increasing the chances that people are going to end up being routed through that community.
I suspect the reason that you got routed to the wrong gate was because you were going in and the location that you were going to was closer to the resident-only gate instead of the one where there’s a call button.
Since there’s more than one way in/out of that community, I really think you should go back to making all of the roads as private type. To get around the “being routed to wrong gate,” you could set restrictions on the segment at the resident-only gate. Of course, then residents won’t be routed that way either, because Waze as no way of knowing that they can use the restricted segment. The upside is that the segment will still be on their app, and they can drive it, even though you’re telling Navigation to restrict routing for all vehicle types.
Did I miss something? I thought that on private gated communities with a resident only entrance AND a public guard gated entrance we would use a one way out street at the resident only entrance. Residents would know how to get home, and Waze would catch up with routing once inside. This way the visitors would be guided to the guard gated front entrance. I’ve done this on a few communities like Las Vegas Country Club community though Machete808(5) edited it today to make the whole segment one way private out. I had originally had a very small segment as one way out, and haven’t yet found an issue being routed to addressses within the community through this resident only entrance.
If that’s the way that it’s supposed to be done, then by all means, do it that way.
One question, though: If enough Waze-using residents just head in through the one-way road, against the direction of the one-way, isn’t that eventually going to cause a MP to appear?
I know it took a couple times for ABC836 and myself to close a MP report before it disappeared. Seems like a wazer kept ignoring a Waze shortcut. It’s similar to “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?” We may never know… Lol
Naw - remember, Mr. Owl solved that for us: It’s three crunch three.
But what I was trying to ask is this: If you set the resident-only gate as one-way heading out in order to make sure that visitors get routed to the gate that they can come in through, any Wazer residents that drive in that back gate are going to be going against the direction of the one-way road. Won’t that eventually create a MP?
That’s what I though too when SuperDave and I were working on it today. I would think just the one way out, or just restricting the turn in would eventually make MP’s. If what we did today works, then we’ll see if any MP’s come up. We shall see. Once I get home I’ll put that address in again and see how it routes.
Res Entrance:
In = Private + Street + Private
Out = street
Note: None of the above with unnecessary turn restrictions… And inside the complex is set as streets.
The above will cause the routing to go through the Main Entrance and leave by the best route out. When the residence ignore the route and goes through the Res Entrance there will be no error and auto route without any issues.
Ok, good to know for places which have more than one entrance and the other is restricted to residents only. Thanks for the clarification.
One thing I’m not sure you’re saying here, so if you could clarify, please? You’re using “in” and “out” on the entrances. So you’re saying you want split one-way roads at the entrance to these types of residential areas? Is that correct?
Simple answer yes… but need to make sure that the “residence entrance” does allow the guest to exit there also…I know of a few that require the guest to exit via the man gate…
