I agree. I couldn’t use scripts for most of my editing until very recently, and even though it was annoying, I think I learned to edit more carefully because of that at least some of the time 
. I am fine with taking the script section out or adding some sort of qualifier like “basemap editing can be done well without scripts, but if you choose to use them, the following may be useful.” Any thoughts?
I have spoken with Kartografer since the last post here to discuss some of the basemap stuff I’ve seen.
I found an old forum post where it is mentioned that Interstate 10 had been imported as “Primary” (not PS — a very , very long time ago, Major Highway was called Primary, and Minor Highway was called Secondary – and yes, there was still a “Primary Street” at the time), rather than as Freeway. It is likely that all Interstates were imported as MH (“Primary”). In fact, here is another old post I found with a screenshot that shows an Interstate as “Primary” (MH) and a US route as “Secondary” (mH).
I believe that the import itself (the TIGER data) comprised only lines, and that a Waze process did some conversions on those lines. Any Interstate (name “I- ##”) was set to Primary (MH) and any route with “Hwy” or “Rte” in the name was set to Secondary (mH). I do not believe that Freeway or PS were used for any part of that process.
Not sure the extent of Dirt or Private Road in the import. It may be worth expanding on this a bit specifically, to say that although there may be some Dirt or Private Roads in the import, it’s likely that many more basemap roads should be either of these types at least in certain areas (i.e., those areas that are still “basemap” quality).
Anyway, a very good page and I find very little room for improvement.
A little more history for fun…
“Primary Street” used to be confusingly under the Highways category even though functionally it was between Street and mH (“Secondary”) even then. Admittedly!
Staff ran a process in October 2009 to fix road types and fill gaps in some highways. I believe this process changed all Interstates to Freeway type, among other things. Apparently it also changed US Highways to Primary (MH).
Here’s an image of the “new and improved” map editor :lol: released early October 2009! If you weren’t editing back then, believe me, you don’t even wanna know what it was like.
