[New Page] Community Chat Platforms

Hello! We had a brief discussion in the #wazeopedia_usa channel about a community chat platform page that would discuss the various platforms that we have available to communicate (namely WME Chat, Discord, GHO and Slack). I’ve mocked up a draft in my namespace here as a rough first cut:

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/User:Jushag/Community_Chat_Platforms

Please let me know if people see value in adding this page and any additional details that would be pertinent. As a start, linking to it on the New Editors Welcome page seems like a logical addition.

Thanks!

I like this draft. We should probably should mention the forum too, and how it relates. It would be worth saying that Discord is the preferred communication platform for editors in the USA (and Australia), but in other countries different platforms are preferred (Thailand prefers Slack, UK uses the forum, etc). I know we are writing this for the US wiki, but it can be confusing when, for example, a US editor wants to talk to an editor from the UK, for example, and doesn’t get any response in #united_kingdom on the global server.

Maybe “community Communication platforms” because forum isn’t exactly chat.
And I agree - in the slack section, at least a link to wazeinternational.slack.com because the USA is also a part of the international community, and it helps to know the various ways to reach wazers outside of the US

I added a section for this:
https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/User:Jushag/Community_Chat_Platforms#Waze_Forum

I added some words for this:
Discord is a chat platform that is available in both desktop and mobile formats and is the main form of communication used among US Waze map editors. Although the US and Australia have adopted Discord as their main real-time chat platform, this preference does vary by country.

I can certainly change the name of the page if it is to be published.

I added some words for this:
An international Waze Slack channel exists at http://wazeinternational.slack.com - the usage of this channel varies by country and is not extensively used by the US.

These changes are reflected in the current draft: https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/User:Jushag/Community_Chat_Platforms

Good idea.
Can you combine your new page with this mostly obsolete page?

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Help_others_and_support_the_Waze_community

I could if that makes sense. However it seems that page is completely obsolete to me, with the exception of a general recommendation to look at the forum to lend guidance. What information on the page is worth saving?

This page looks good. I’d like to suggest a small change to the paragraph about WME chat:

The forum is still the official communication platform for all editors, so we don’t want to suggest otherwise, and if someone is set to invisible in WME, they can’t chat or be chatted with.

Also, messages in the forum are called Private Messages, not Direct Messages.

As for the obsolete page, we can just put a link to this new page in the mbox

Thanks for the feedback! The changes have been made and are reflected in the draft in my namespace.

Sounds good, should we leave that page as is, and just refer to the new communication platform page? Is there a recommendation where this new page should be moved to?

Let’s move it to the main space under the title “Communication platforms.” Obviously a community is involved in the communication, unless I’m missing something.

I moved the page to the main namespace here:

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Communication_Platforms

I was hoping to be able to link to this page in the Welcome page:

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Waze_Map_Editor/Welcome#Before_you_get_started

After the first bullet (* Understand there are guidelines…) I propose to add:

Or something along those lines.

As far as the obsolete page referenced above, I’m going to work on a draft of a replacement for that page and potentially merge it into the Communication_Platforms page. It might be called something general like “The Waze Map Editing Community”. I’ll update the post when I have something to read through.

We use sentence case for page titles, just like Wikipedia. I have fixed this https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Communication_platforms

Please add the link on the welcome page. I also deleted the Jushag page you put in the main space and fixed your redirect.

Great, thank you! I’ve added the link here:

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Waze_Map_Editor/Welcome#Before_you_get_started

I appreciate the feedback and assistance.

I like the proposal. One thing I think should be expanded on is the Forum information. As Kartografer mentioned previously, it is the go-to for the UK. In the US, it is also our platform for proposing any changes to the wiki or other leadership related topics. Discord is used as the “pool of shared meaning” to bounce ideas around, but any official communication is done via the forum.

Good work!!

Great work, Jushag.

My only suggestion would be regarding the Discord Server List. I would suggest moving the Global & Mapraid and Australia servers to a sub-topic as this Wiki is USA-centric.
I am envisioning something like,
2.1 Discord Server List (USA)
2.2 Discord Server List (Non-USA)

Thanks for the hard work you’ve put into this effort.
