You raise a good point here: we need a way to push important updates to editors. I know of some busy editors that work over large areas, but I’ve never seen them post to the forum.
We have the opt-in AM list in Google Docs which we can notify manually, or we can ask Waze to send something out to all editors on our behalf.

Given that this is supposed to be a “social network” based app, what would be wrong in pushing noticed to the facebook group? Or have a sub-group of the UK Waze for AM’s? Push the notifications there.

I’d like to say something from the other side.
I’m a new Waze user (2 weeks and this is my first post). I’ve already made some edits on the map and tried to clear up a few reports. I’m well aware that I don’t have any experience and I, for one, would appreciate some sort of feedback on what I’ve done. I know that Waze is going through some major updates at the moment, so I understand why none of my edits have shown up in the client yet (my first edits were just after the 24th July update). I have made a concious decision to try and limit any editing I do until I can see the results and know I’m getting things right.
If I were to apply to be an AM, I would have no objection to some sort of quiz or examination of my edits. I think it would be appropriate if I was taking responsibility for more than just where I drive. I also wouldn’t object to some form of mentoring - I’d rather be told I was getting it wrong than continue messing up the map for other people.
They’re all really good suggestions I think, ones which protect the map, train people and as you say iain, give feedback and show people where they’re going wrong, so they can improve

Step 0, they complete a quick quiz on the same format containing 5-10 simple questions. If they don’t get those right, we can rest assured theyre not the people we need as the information is available in the wiki.
Why do you keep pushing this idea away? We need people that can use their initiative and look to find answers to their own problems. Those people turn out to be the best editors and is one of the qualities we should be looking for in those applying.

Because we want visibility and regulation of who is becoming AM, do we not? You’ve asked for this many, many times. This is the system we’ve been asking for, handed to us on a plate. We just have to take it!
We can easily bury the link to the form somewhere in the Wiki, so that people still need initiative to apply.

It’s a self licking lolly.
How does answering a few questions that have nothing to do with a persons ability to use WME to edit maps help anyone? The process of answering a few questions has no relevance to correctly using the WME. Learning what abbreviations should be used for different street types, and when to use what road types are trivial issues easily put right by a quick PM/email.
Getting people to realise when WME hasn’t actually connected two segments together, and the correct use of turn restrictions isn’t something you can check with a few questions.
Here’s the basic form that Waze are suggesting. I’m sure we’ll be able to customise it with our own text and links.
Applications go into a spreadsheet for review, and once approved Waze will make them AMs for their areas.
I don’t think we need to spend a lot of time prevaricating over this; anything is better than what we have now.
Err… no it isn’t - and that’s the problem.
I’d agree with that. We need a proper approach to this and work proactively, not approve someone and wait for them to fuck up before correcting them. It’s what is being done already.
Showing even a basic knowledge of simple parts of the wiki is vital and ensures the user is aware of the Standards we have set, otherwise what was the point?
