I made updates to the Lafayette/West Lafayette area based on the new guidelines and people having been changing them to the way they previously were. Let’s everyone get on the same page here, please.

Great idea.
I see the biggest change to me is the use of primary roads will be greatly increased!
Can you link to some examples of how you are drawing the line between standard roads and primary roads?

Would it be possible for Waze to notify us when they go and change things so drastically? I don’t check the wiki pages daily, so I don’t know when they do this stuff…
Ok, see from the INDOT page where we can get the FC info. I will take care of updating as much of Seymour and Columbus as I can.

This is actually not a Waze-driven change but a US Champ and editor one: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=276&t=85397
I don’t check the wiki daily either. I follow @WazeMapping on twitter and they usually post what’s new and I’ll see it come across my feed.
I would definitely use the cross reference chart on the wiki. https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Road_types/USA#FC_cross_reference
Having that side-by-side with the FNC Map helps you determine what the road type should be in waze.

Wait a minute… Who’s in charge here? Waze is not setting the standards for how their maps are to be drawn?
VernL4, the USA has been self-managed for a while now. My understanding is that the most active & trusted US editors make the calls on how best to handle the US mapping.
Of course, this is done in collaboration with Waze, but it is not centrally-dictated. This is a community-driven service, so it makes sense that the contributors are setting direction.
For my fellow Hoosiers:

This is the guide I will be following for the Columbus area:

Does anyone disagee?
Actually, I’ve noticed that the PDF I linked to above is not 100% accurate.
It shows 200South (https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=3&lat=39.17803&lon=-85.92526&layers=1925&env=usa&nodes=13866814) going east past Highway 11. The sat image currently (2014-05-09) is on there is correct it showing that 200S does not go past Highway 11.
While this is part of the strategic plan for Columbus, it is not something that has even begun being built yet. I wonder how many other things on these maps are showing planned upgrades or new roads that don’t exist?
I’ll take care of Metropolitan Indianapolis and areas out to the west towards Illinois ( Terre Haute) and areas out toward Ohio ( Richmond)
Seems spot on to me, I got my work cut out for me here in Metro Indy!
Better get to it!
Yes, I have noticed that with a road or two in Tippecanoe county. I just double checked in-person that the road doesn’t exist yet!
Many many roads are like that, they get submitted to be input into the map before they are physically present. There is a company ( can’t think of name right now) that works with local municipalities and issues 10 year projection planning maps with future roads on the map…some roads are still 4-5 years out from being built! Most of Hendricks County has this form of master map in their Town Halls.
Make sure you review the wiki thoroughly. I’ve noticed that sometimes a road changes color in the INDOT map, but according to the wiki rules, you don’t change the road type.
For example, US Highway 31 should always be a major highway according to the wiki, even though it changes from “Principal Arterial” to “Urban Major Collector” to “Rural Major Collector”. Normally, this means Waze types “Major Highway” and then “Primary Road”, but if I read the wiki correctly, the fact that it is “US” means it stays Major Highway.
That’s correct!

Yes, always bow down to the Wiki! ![]()
I’ll need at least a couple days to a week to get everything ship shape here in the Indy Area and then out in other areas that I manage ( Terre Haute-Kokomo-Richmond) and other places.
Yes, it is exhausting. I just had to redo most of what a rank 2 editor undid. ![]()
