New Wazer, Lethbridge Roads

I just got a new smartphone and the Waze app. I’ve tried adding a few places and then drove around some new roads that haven’t been mapped. I tried paving some segments as I was driving and then editing using the WME. I’ll need to learn a bit more and read the documentation again before I commit edits. I thought I did pretty well, but the editor then says I don’t have permissions to make changes.

So, how do I go about adding new roundabouts and modifying existing roads etc? Do I need to wait and earn points or do I need to ask for edit permissions?

I’ll probably do more in the summer when I get back in my bike, although it was pretty nice out there today!

Welcome!

A lot of segments will be locked to new editors to prevent damage to the map. You can request an unlock on the “CAN Update & Unlock Request” forum when there’s a change you need made.

The Canada Wazeopedia page is a great starting point for your reading - also, we have a couple of active Google Hangouts where you can get tips from other editors and participate in the community. Feel free to send me a private message with your Google e-mail address and I can add you!

Cheers!

Thanks, PM sent with my gmail.

What would be the most useful things for a newbie to do, as I start to learn the WME? I’ve started to add a few places (Timmies, Boston Pizza, etc) around a new dble hockey rink/curling complex. My thinking is that people from other cities coming to tournaments/bonspiels would find that useful. Some of the details (a couple of addresses) didn’t stick from the app. I’ll wait 'til the adds are approved to make changes. Will these places be automatically populated from Google maps if they exist there?

Is just driving around new roads a useful activity? I did this a fair bit last summer as I helped my wife learn to ride a motorbike. I will probably do this a fair bit next summer with my son.

Adding places is very useful - not just limited to what a tourist might find useful.

There is no automatic population from Google - but some searches serve Google results, too.

Driving around new roads - not a bad thing, but usually it’s better to put them in through WME.

Right, thanks. I guess I’ll wait to get level 2 so I can join some new roads to existing ones and make some easier WME edits. I fixed a couple of local reported issues that showed up in the editor. I’ll check a couple of other ones by driving tmw, but a few don’t make sense. When the reports are off, like “Hwy 877 is unpaved”, when hwy 877 is nowhere near the report, what do you do- just close the report?

You can ask for more information - or go check out Hwy 877.

Also, there are A LOT of unnamed roads in the newer areas - adding names to the roads would be A HUGE help! You should be able to edit those as an R1.

Great, I checked out some issues and unnamed roads today. I have friend who does the GIS for the city, I’ll see if I can get some updated maps and save on gas!
